The Christian Atheist

Oriana Fallaci may not have believed, but she understood the importance of Christian belief to civilization:

I see a hymn to Reason, a revival of clear thinking…choice…the rediscovery of freedom. The redemption of liberty…an idea that nobody had ever had…. Life always resurrects, Life is eternal. And, together with the discourse on Reason, on Freedom, this is the point that mostly convinces me…the refusal of Death, the apotheosis of Life…its alternative is Nothingness. And let’s face it: such is the principle which leads and feeds our civilization.

What constantly amuses me is the irrational atheist’s assertion that the Good exists without God. I don’t think “Christian Atheist” is a useful term, but it’s an important concept that I think more agnostics and atheists should contemplate before they unthinkingly cast their lot in with the nihilists.

Morality is not the Golden Rule, and its clear that those who think Buddhism or Hinduism feature moralities significantly akin to Christianity don’t know much about the practice of those religions or the history of the fatalistic cultures wherein variants of those religions were dominant. As a Westerner, one of the funnier aspects of “The Tale of Genji” is the constant fear of Buddhist monks descending in force from their mountain monasteries and pillaging the villagers and travellors below.

Again with the New Man

From NRO’s Corner:

There is almost no NCO development going on today, not because MNSTC-I isn’t trying, but because Iraq’s general officers are terrified to give flexibility to even officers below them, much less NCOs. They remember when the enlisted men were mostly conscripts, and they still treat them as such. Even most NCOs function as little more than personal servants to the officers above them.

This is a cultural mentality that must be broken, and changed. But it’s not going to be easy. If only we could truly start over with truly tabula rasa recruits, we’d have a much easier time. But we can’t do that; we have to fight the military culture of the Middle East that does not reward independent thinking.

So, in order to even begin to think about winning, all the US military has to do is change a military culture that has pervaded a region for thousands of years. And it’s not as if the Middle East hasn’t seen plenty of conflict in that time, so it’s not as if simply exposing them to combat is going to bring about that change.

It’s amazing how similar the goals of the US military here are to those of the old Soviets and Western feminists. Their objectives always so simple and attainable, all they require is to completely change something that hasn’t changed in millenia. There are few things more lethal than a sincere Utopian.

From the “Women Never Lie” department

They don’t lie about rape:

A sailor pleaded guilty Monday to abducting and killing a Marine corporal he thought had been involved in a gang rape. The rape turned out to be a lie, but the truth surfaced too late….

Federal agents had testified at his Article 32 hearing, the military equivalent of a grand jury investigation, that Jackson had been fooled into falling in love with a woman who called herself Samantha and made up a story about being raped by servicemen.

“Samantha” turned out to be Ashley Elrod, a 22-year-old hotel clerk on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, who testified that she lied about being raped. She said she “might have” told Jackson that one of the Marines was named Huff or Huffman, and she said Jackson called her after Huff was killed. Elrod has not been charged.

And they certainly wouldn’t lie about being abused by a wifebeater, not when there’s nothing at stake except hundreds of millions of dollars:

Hurt by her leaked court papers claiming he was a violent, drug-taking drunk, Macca has enough ammunition to destroy the beauty’s lies — and prove that it was HER who was the violent nightmare in their four-year marriage….

“That poisonous b***h doesn’t deserve a penny.”

Geoff — who was dismissed by Sir Paul in 2004 — has repeatedly turned down offers of up to £200,000 to reveal all about his time with Macca and Heather.

He has only broken his silence now because he was infuriated by Heather’s claims the rock legend humiliated and physically abused her.

“To brand Paul a wife-beater is the most absurd f***ing claim anyone can make,” storms Geoff. “I was with them for four years when she says a lot of this took place. On my son’s life I NEVER saw him lay a finger on her or throw abuse at her. Absolutely no way. Her allegations are outrageous lies. It is pure wickedness.”

In these latter days, when a man has to be an absolute fool to even consider marrying any woman who lacks a serious religious devotion, one can only look on with equal parts awe and horror at Mr. McCartney’s failed attempt to forge a marital bond with a psychotic one-legged hooker.

One would do well to keep these two incidents in mind the next time one hears a sob story about a poor, betrayed innocent’s mistreatment at the hands of her bestial ex-boyfriend. Never forget that many women love drama and like nothing better than to be the star of their own tragedy; they know very well how much some foolish men are all too eager to play hero.

VPFL Week 7

90 Mile High Club
54 COS McRays

87 Newport Sea Dogs
59 Pale Horse Cowboys

79 Burns Montgomerys
71 East Mesa WhiteTrash

61 Mounds View Meerkats
31 West Texas Vikings

49 Greenfield Grizzlies
41 Santa Barbarians

Not a bad weekend this time, even if I managed to sit another big scorer for the third week in a row. This time it was Crumpler, who naturally broke out for his first 3-TD game ever. And I finally broke my duck in both THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS LEAGUE IN SPORTS and the soccer team, getting a win courtesy of the Arizona defense and a goal courtesy of a less-incompetent-than-usual first touch on a rebound from the crossbar.

I thought that would be winning goal, as it put us in the lead and we’d been dominating the game throughout. Unfortunately, we then gave up two penalty kicks – they scored one – and then beat us on penalties. It was just a cup game, so it’s actually kind of a relief to not have to play two games a week considering how many of our players have already broken down, but it was disappointing nevertheless.

Projection

David Limbaugh ignores who is really colluding with Democrats in a feeble attempt to flip it around:

Will disgruntled conservatives really collude with Democrats?

Don’t discount the possibility that all this hype about conservatives staying home is a carefully orchestrated ruse to suppress their turnout. Even if it isn’t, the liberals’ arrogance and premature boasting will surely motivate to the polls all but those rare, implacable conservatives, because even disgruntled conservatives know we can’t afford to teach big-spending Republicans a lesson in the middle of a war.

This is a perfect example of someone who is only paying attention to the media and his own wishful thinking. Refusing to vote for faux conservative Republican politicians who act, think and vote like moderate Democrats is not colluding with Democrats, it is refusing to support those who are openly and proudly collaborating with them.

Bush and the national Republican leadership are far worse than even the most cynical Republican loyalist imagines, they are traitors who are actively working to subvert the very concept of the United States as a nation in favor of a pan-American supernational government. Not that the domestic betrayals aren’t enough reason to stay far away from the current Republican party as possible, but they’re actually minor in comparison with the ultimate sell-out.

Seattle Scumhawks

I was happy with the way the Purple People Eaters devoured Matt “we’ll take the ball and we’re gonna score” Hasselbeck and company yesterday in Seattle, but now I’m delighted after reading this little story courtesy of NRO’s Nordlinger:

The Seattle Seahawks were temporary tenants of the football stadium at the University of Washington a few years back, when the Seahawks’ new field was under construction. My dad and I attended a pre-season game, in the heart of Seattle. A beautiful August day, the sun, the lake, the mountains . . .

Just before game time, a color guard of local Boy Scouts marched in with the flag, and the crowd rose to their feet and began to boo.

Jim McDermott, Patty Murray — I’d been embarrassed by my state, but that was the low point.

Who would have thought there would be a reason to despise a city as boring as Seattle? I was leaning slightly towards the Steelers for tradition’s sake last January anyhow, but now I’m feeling a positive sense of schadenfreude about those rain-soaked, flannel-wearing flamer-loving losers in the Northwest.

So, how ya’ll like that Burleson, Seattle? He’s well worth the money we’re paying Hutchinson, isn’t he.

From the “Women are Children” department

I’m not saying it couldn’t have been said better, but I doubt it could have been said any more accurately:

“I think the fact that I am a woman will raise expectations in terms of more hope in government, and I will not disappoint…The gavel of the speaker of the House is in the hands of special interests, and now it will be in the hands of America’s children.”
– Nancy Pelosi

Ah yes, no doubt she lays claim to that integrity which belongs to the innocent. I find myself rather hoping that Pelosi becomes Speaker of the House as she will no doubt supply ample amounts of blogfodder.

If we could only rely on her to stick to her timetable for proposing a plan for governance, I would even endorse her. Unfortunately, it’s pretty clear that her proposals will revolve around longer recess and extra chocolate milk for everyone in the cafeteria.

It takes Chuck Norris to hold us back

It doesn’t surprise me to get kicked off the headliner’s strip at WND again, however long it happens to last this time. But it gives me no small amount of pleasure to have it happen this time because it took Chuck Norris to do it. Here’s a few of my favorite biographical facts about my new fellow columnist:

Chuck Norris doesn’t actually write books, the words assemble themselves out of fear.

The grass is always greener on the other side, unless Chuck Norris has been there. In that case the grass is most likely soaked in blood and tears.

Hellen Keller’s favorite color is Chuck Norris.

We live in an expanding universe. All of it is trying to get away from Chuck Norris.

Chuck Norris never has to wax his skis because they’re always slick with blood.

It wants gender-free

I’ll give it gender-free. Via WND:

TO THE man on the street, the man on the street has never been much of a problem. But the language police of Scotland’s largest council have decreed otherwise. The man on the street and the girls in the office are now officially wrong.

Glasgow city councillors of a less politically correct ilk are scratching their heads. Dr Chris Mason, a Lib Dem member, declared: “Politeness, courtesy and respect – all these things are important. But a book of rules about what you can and cannot say? B*******.”

But Glasgow City Council, whose senior figures include Lady Provost Liz Cameron and leisure director and First Minister’s wife Bridget McConnell, is clear about the problem of oppressed women in its ranks. The issue is laid out in “Language Matters: A Guide for Good Practice”, which has been circulated to the council’s staff and elected officials.

And don’t the little fascists just love it! Consider this enthustiastic reaction from a thing called Helen: I am delighted that Glasgow City Council is going to outlaw sexism. I really despise being referred to as ‘hen’ and feel there is no place for this level of offensive disempowerment. I’m actively involved in trying to rid the church of exclusive language, and would like to see certain words banned such as brethren…..and yes, I’d like to see the end of the word chairman. Chairperson is absolutely fine. Likewise, my current job title is Centre Manager, NOT Centre Manageress. I think we need to come down like a ton of bricks on anyone who thinks it’s acceptable to indulge in the vile practice of sexism whether male or female.

I have a solution that should please everyone. To avoid offense, simply refer to an individual who one believes might be sensitive to such potentially damaging language as “it”. In the place of “Centre Manageress”, one might say “Centre Manager Thing”, just as one would refer to the “things at the office” in the place of “girls”.

And as we are reminded that things have names, there is no need to address any individual thing as Mrs, Miss or Ms, simply be polite enough to address it by its full name at all times.

See how I avoid the vile practice of sexism? A gentleman is always courteous, after all.
