China bans sex disclosure:

A new Chinese law calls for prison terms of up to three years and fines for doctors and other health workers who assist in telling the gender of unborn babies, leading to abortions, state media said on Monday. The legal amendment would give new teeth to a government campaign to outlaw the selective abortion of female foetuses and correct an imbalance in the ratio of boys to girls that has grown since China’s one-child policy was introduced more than 20 years ago.

“The revision is aimed to prevent the selection of a child’s gender when not conducted for medical purposes,” An Jian, a member of China’s parliament who discussed the amendment over the weekend, was quoted as saying.

“Artificial gender selection can jeopardise China’s population structure, leading to social instability,” An wrote in a report.

Government figures show 119 boys are born for every 100 girls in the world’s most populous nation. About 40 million men may live as frustrated bachelors by 2020.

I find it rather telling that one can usually predict the Western feminist position by knowing what Communist and other totalitarian states require. Let’s see if I have it right. A woman has an absolute right to an abortion, because it’s her body etc. But because too many women don’t want female children, it is necessary to forcibly prevent doctors from telling pregnant women what they’re having, because if they know they might exercise their absolute right to kill their unborn daughter. In other words, women can only exercise their absolute right as long as they do so for approved reasons, like wanting to finish law school because the country so desperately needs yet another useless lawyer.

The whole responsibility for wholesale slaughter thing aside, if I was a feminist, I’d be embarrassed to open my mouth in public. Of course, they’re women, so logical consistency isn’t necessarily all that high on their priority list.

“They’re killing little girls for their sex! It’s genocide!”

I thought abortion wasn’t murder. I also thought female was a sex, not a race.

“You know what I mean! It’s anti-female discrimination and it has to be stopped!”

Hey, you’re the one who supports abortion. Heck, you support making taxpayers pay for abortion. If you want to stop the abortion of unborn girls, then ban abortion.

“But they’re eliminating millions of women from the population!”

And just who is eliminating women? All those pregnant men getting abortions?

What we’re seeing here is just the first in a great many waves of reality washing away the pillars of the Equalitarian Society. Most societies will only travel so far along a suicidal path before self-preservation kicks in. Monogamous marriage will almost certainly go first, then abortion will be banned soon enough, for reasons utilitarian, not moral. Easy divorce will be next, followed eventually by the women’s vote.

I am reading this Christmas season, as my wont nearly every year, The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. It’s a part of my personal Christmas tradition, and while I don’t know why I started doing this, I think I know why I continue. It’s something related to this lovely turn of phrase by NRO’s Amy Wellborn:

Look at it closely, with clear eyes. At every turn in this story of this baby there is threat and fear and powers circling, attempting to strike at the light. We might forget, we might wrap up Christmas in good cheer, but Christian tradition doesn’t.

It makes no intellectual sense, but I suspect CS Lewis’s instincts were neverthless correct when he separated Father Christmas from Aslan in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. One cannot understand the depth and significance of Christianity if one does not stare into the darkness it stands against. Nietzsche was right, the abyss does stare back, but when faced with the Light of the World, it blinks and retreats.

“None shall stop the Dark from rising,” shouts the Black Rider in the book. And in that book, which is as near to perfect as a children’s book can be, the three from the circle and the three from the track suffice to turn it back.

For Christians, however, Christmas is more than a celebration, it is a reminder of a fulfilled vow, that in time, one shall stop the Dark from rising.

Ann Althouse drives a stake – perhaps accidentally – through the heart of Christian public school apologists:

What a powerful district court opinion! It will remain unreviewed, the final word at the end of a cautionary tale for all school boards who contemplate adopting Intelligent Design in the future…..

If there is any controversy at all — and could there not be? — opponents will bring up the Dover case and make much of the fact that a federal judge has equated Intelligent Design with religion. It simply won’t be possible to adopt Intelligent Design without talking a lot about religion now. The next school board may be “smarter” about what it needs to do to achieve its end, but if it’s that smart, it should also perceive the world of trouble that lies ahead. If the judge’s decision doesn’t faze them, the political losses of the school board that voted yes certainly should. Proponents of teaching Intelligent Design in science classes will have a hard time admitting it, but this one district court opinion just killed their movement.

Now, I am no champion of ID, but I am a champion of an absolute parental right to dictate the content of their children’s educations. The Pennsylvania court has made it clear that the public propaganda system will brook no challenge to its Officially Approved Views, even by those who are legally responsible for defining them. What has killed one ill-conceived movement will only strengthen another, much better one, and this is a good thing.

There is no fix for the “problems” of the public schools, but there is an answer. Don’t permit your children to set foot inside them.

Roberto Gotta criticizes Mondiale marketing:

For a number of years, Del Piero has been the public face of a brand of mineral water Uliveto, also the official supplier to the azzurri. The script writers were probably overfatigued when they wrote the storyline. In a variety of situations and locations, Del Piero has been extolling the virtues of said water to a… bird. The little critter flies into the dining room while Del Piero is having lunch and, once safely perched atop a chair’s back, has a short conversation with him in a falsetto voice.

In another sequence, a flight attendant brings Del Piero a glass of water but the Juve player kindly turns it down, saying that he’s already got his own bottle, all the while trying to keep from her the fact he’s also talking to the little bird, concealed under a folded newspaper.

Unfortunately, this series, which in itself helps project as clean an image of Del Piero as of the mineral water, became a nightmare as soon as opposing fans and common people got hold of it. While ‘bird’ may have a regular meaning in the British Isles but also a second, less noble one, its Italian equivalent also takes on the meaning of, er, a lower part of the male body which is usually well hidden in underwear.

No sweeping sociological assertion, I just thought this was funny. I also found the following to be interesting, considering the way that parochial Americans believe fascism to be nothing more than a Bad Word to try and pin on members of the other faction:

Lazio striker Paolo Di Canio is to appeal against a ban and a fine imposed following a recent straight-arm salute, claiming that while the gesture is fascist it not of a racist character.

‘I am a fascist, not a racist,’ Di Canio told the Italian news agency ANSA on Friday. ‘I give the straight arm salute because it is a salute from a ‘camerata’ to ‘camerati’. The salute is aimed at my people. With the straight arm I don’t want to incite violence and certainly not racial hatred,’ he said.

From comrade to comrades… sounds very “right-wing”, doesn’t it. No doubt as a member of the “far-right”, Comrade Paolo is big on decentralization, outlawing public education and no income taxes.

Swedish Sangarites suffer exposure:

Sweden launched a probe on Wednesday to understand how eugenics, a theory on improving the human race used by Nazi Germany to justify the Holocaust, became broadly accepted in the Nordic state in the early 20th century.

Sweden is now known for its strong social welfare system and outspoken advocacy for human rights, but in the past it has experimented with social engineering. This led to abuses such as the forcible sterilization of around 60,000 women in 1936-76.

I shall eagerly await the explanation of how the government actions of this feminist, socialist nation will be blamed on right-wing ideology. Both socialism and feminism always pave the road to the grave, for the individual as well as the society, in one way or another.

What do you mean that Genesis is a Jewish text?

Genesis is part of the Torah, the Jewish Law. One could as sensibly accuse a Jew of not being a Jew for not subscribing to a 100-percent literal interpretation of Genesis as accusing a Christian of not being a Christian for the same reason.

The reasonable man would not do either.

Since humans are clearly capable of using metaphor, it seems most strange to argue that an omnipotent God is not, especially given how Jesus often taught in parables. If one’s response to hearing the parable of the talents is to run out and start digging up the ground in search of them, then one has missed the point entirely.

I am not arguing that all of Genesis is metaphor or myth, I am simply stating that parts of it appear to be such and there is no divine command for the Christian to reject that possibility whereas there is precisely such a command with regards to the birth, death, resurrection and lordship of Jesus Christ.

Kathleen is unclear on the definition of Christianity:

Are we to believe a self-proclaimed Christian believer when he insists that he don’t have a dog in this hunt? Call it protective dissonance or just plain ole head-in-the-sand denial, but doesn’t Christianity kinda obligate its followers to open wide and and say “Ah” to the whole ‘I’m-God-and-I-created-the-universe-all-by-myself’ story?

No, Christians must “believe with their heart and confess with their tongue that Jesus Christ is Lord.” Those who follow the way are obligated to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.” The popular notion that subscribing to a specific interpretation of Genesis is required to be a Christian is a little ironic; it is, after all, a Jewish text and I don’t believe anyone has ever suggested that a Jew’s Jewishness depends on his belief in a 24-hour first day.

Satan and all his demons presumably know the precise truth of the origin of the species, and quite possibly of the origin of the Earth as well. They even believe in God as well as His Son.

They are not, however, Christians.

Understanding, wisdom and knowledge are all good things. Wisdom is considered one of the greatest gifts of God. But God desires love and obedience above all. Anyone who is a parent should understand this easily.

And fresh from demonstrating her ignorance of religion, Kathleen demonstrates that she knows nothing about philosophy as well:

Feministe: “Rape isn’t bad because it’s harmful to people — it’s bad because it pollutes God’s house.”

Looks like she skewered your notion that ‘rape is bad because I have this holy book, see, and it says that rape is a sin cuz it besmircheth the temple of my make-believe skygod.’ Hard to miss, unless you’re projecting ‘cower and whisper’, no?

As more than a few commenters have already pointed out, this doesn’t even begin to address the point I made. To say “rape is bad because it’s harmful” assumes two things:

1) That rape is actually harmful. This is debatable at best, since rape does not inherently require much more physical harm than sexual intercourse. Any potential psychological damage can easily be dismissed as a social artifact of the sort once attached to extramarital sex, which proper social conditioning could and should eliminate. A harm-based argument against rape is rather like arguing against digital copyright violation; the purported harm is nebulous and ill-defined. Rape/copy all you like, at the end of the day, the owner still has the goods.

2) That harming another individual is inherently wrong. There is no shortage of ethical systems which directly reject this, from the “do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law” of Aleister Crowley and its subsequent revision by W. Somerset Maugham, to the Will to Power of Friedrich Nietzsche, the murderously existential nihilism of Jean-Paul Sartre and the lethal collective imperative of Marx and all his many intellectual descendants. This is a particularly stupid assumption, given that one of the most powerful extant strains of political philosophy denies that the individual has any rights at all and celebrates his negation in the name of social justice and/or revolution.

Feministe’s attempted rebuttal is downright amusing, considering that as a feminist, she publicly identifies herself as an advocate of a collectivist philosophy furiously dedicated to directly harming millions of individuals by means financial, legal and physical. One would have to regard her political allegiance to be in complete violation of her asserted ethics if one were to be so cruel as to take her seriously.

Don’t look to me for outrage against the recent decision by a Pennsylvania judge to ban ID from the public school classrooms in Dover. The fact that I am an avowed evolution skeptic does not mean that I am impressed with ID or its advocates. “I don’t know and I don’t believe that you do either” sums up the totality of my position on the origin of the species. And furthermore, I am completely opposed to teaching evolution, ID or the Bible in the public schools… as well as teaching English, mathematics, geography, civics, French, home economics and gym.

It would not be possible for me to care less what is taught in the government propaganda factories. I don’t get worked up about what is taught in the North Korean schools either. If you are foolish enough to entrust the education of your children to the evil minions of the NEA and the state and federal bureaucracies, you will deserve exactly what you get.

Unfortunately, your children won’t.

Jill at Feministe just can’t help herself. She’s helplessly drawn, like an angry, bitter moth to the raging inferno:

I really didn’t want to post anything about V-x D-y ever again. I stopped reading his blog. I agreed with commenters who said that linking to him only gives him more attention. I won’t write out his whole name — that way, when he googles himself for masturbatory material, hopefully he’ll come up short. I vowed never to link to him again.

Except now….

What a frightened bunch of little girls! They want to ignore it, except they can’t, but they’re afraid that if they say anything critical, they’ll get called on the carpet and paddled. Apparently it’s a lot more fun to simply cast aspersions and make baseless assertions about how illogical and ridiculous my arguments are when they don’t have to defend their statements. And yet, if my arguments are so flawed, why do they feel the need to cower and whisper passive-aggressively about them instead of boldly confronting them in public?

Now, I don’t care if they link to this blog or not. I don’t care if they read it or not – heck, I don’t even care if people who like it read it or not. Take it or leave it as you like. But I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out the weird behavior of these particular critics.

Now, if anyone wants to take issue with anything I write, they can post comments here, or, in the case of a more lengthy critique, email it to me and upon request I’ll post right here, in its entirety – subject to reasonable space limitations, shall we say a 3,000 word maximum? That seems reasonable. Also, if it’s redundant, boring or involves something that’s been previously addressed, I reserve the right to ignore it.

Back to the Brave Sir Robinettes… their cowardice is rivaled only by the inability of their constricted little minds to even grasp that they are missing the larger portion of the picture. Thus, the incredulity with which some Pandagonians regard my recent call for George Bush’s impeachment. I can only conclude that politically speaking, they are flatlanders.

Finally, I noticed the following absurdity on Amanda’s blog: “Also, is it appropriate to throw the fact that KMFDM invented industrial and doesn’t get the cred they deserve in the face of people obsessed with Trent Reznor as if he’s god?

Being a former Wax Trax! signee myself, I think I can state with some authority that KMFDM didn’t invent industrial. Industrial evolved from the technology more than it was created by anyone, in my opinion, but if you’re going to give one well-known industrial band credit, you’d have to give it to Al and Paul from Ministry, who not only did it first, but also did it best.
