Short answer: no

Whoopi Goldberg confirms everything everyone has ever imagined about the intelligence of liberal America by asking a fascinating question of John McCain:

“Should I be worried about being a slave, about being returned to slavery because certain things happened in the Constitution that you had to change?”

I would have voted for McCain had he only answered:

“No, Miss Whoopi, you needn’t be concerned because there’s not much inherent value in a comedienne who isn’t funny or an actress who can’t act. You don’t have to be worried about being enslaved because you’re simply too useless and ugly to be worth your keep. However, the Missus tells me that we are in need of a doorman for one of our seven houses, which fortuitously happens to be one of the few jobs for which my clean and articulate young opponent, Barack Obama, is well-qualified and I look forward to adding him to the house staff in time for Christmas. Whoo-pah!”

As one of Rachel Lucas’s commenters points out, one has to wonder precisely when Whoopi was last a slave. Is she confusing her real life with her movie roles or is this simply some sort of Shirley Maclaine moment?

I can only concur

The Other McCain sums up the new Sitemeter:

Just got my first look at the new format for SiteMeter statistics. It sucks, big-time.

Speaking as a professional game and software designer, all I can say is that the new Sitemeter sucks more badly than nearly any software “improvement” I have ever seen. You actually get less functionality and less information from the initial page than you got before. It’s so utterly horrible; I can’t even imagine bothering to check on my statistics there. The only reason I won’t migrate immediately is that it’s so bad, they’ll surely revert or provide a classic version as soon as their executives see how their traffic has dropped off a cliff.

It’s amazing how many companies blindly go ahead and break things that were previously functional. This is why I’m always an advocate of giving the user optional improvements. If it’s genuinely better, most people will migrate and you can let the transition take place naturally. If you feel the need to throw out the old and cram the new down your user’s throats, chances are that your basic design sucks.

Now THAT is funny

Novelist and journalist David Foster Wallace is dead of an apparent suicide at age 46. Personally, I was a big fan of Wallace — I’ve actually read his doorstop dystopian satire Infinite Jest twice.

I have to admit, I tend to find it more than a little amusing when authors primarily famous for writing “pessimistic” or “dystopian” works wind up killing themselves. Not because I wish them ill or anything, but mostly because everyone acts as if it’s some sort of shocking act that no one could ever have expected.

I’d never read Wallace, but I’ll definitely have to check out Infinite Jest. Not because of the suicide, but because he sounds like a fellow devotee of The Footnote.

VPFL Week 1

73 Judean Peoples Front
43 Black Mouth Curs

69 Burns Redbeards
51 Mounds View Meerkats

66 Valders Valkyries
29 Masonville Marauders

56 Alamo City Spartans
42 Winston Reverends

49 Silver Spooners
49 Greenfield Grizzlies

Off to my usual slow start, scoring more than the other losers, but not enough to win. Apparently, my autodraft is in sync with the Sports Guy: “Reason No. 783 why fantasy football drives me crazy: You only had to watch an hour of that Pack-Vikes game before you realized, “Dammit, I should have had Greg Jennings, Ryan Grant, Donald Driver and Aaron Rodgers three rounds higher.”

Yeah, Bill, well, I got them all. So, if the Packers go 13-3 and lead the league in scoring, I should be all right. Here’s the VP-AFL results for Week One:

Carpe Oro 78
Az Hammeroids 96

Supernauts Jihad 74
Masonville Marauders 112

The Thunder 80
Village Valkyries 72

Alamo City Spartans 108
Cranberry Bogs 99

COS McRays 70
Bukkakelypse Boyz 91

And now the states fall

The Obamanations were whistling in the dark about how the Electoral College means that the presidential election is tabulated state-by-state, which rendered all the national poll results meaningless.

So much for that argument:

Obama/Biden 217
—————-
157 Solid 60 Leaning

McCain/Palin 227
—————-
172 Solid 55 Leaning

Toss Up 94

Ed Whelan notes that this is an 85-vote swing in a single month. If Obama continues on his self-destructive path, this could be a complete reverse of the Clinton-landslide I was expecting. Good humor indeed!

Palin won’t pull Hillary supporters

Of this we can be sure, because the media repeatedly told us so:

The McCain-Palin campaign today announced that New Hampshire State Representative Doreen Howard, a Democratic legislator from Newmarket, has endorsed John McCain for president. Representative Howard previously supported Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s candidacy.

“As a lifelong Democrat who enthusiastically backed Hillary Clinton in the primaries, I am now supporting John McCain.”

I have repeatedly written contemptuously of the general intelligence level of the media, so much so that I occasionally get emails from professional journalists that boil down to little more than whines consisting of “we is too smart, we gots journalist degrees from real gud skools!” The thing that’s so tremendously amusing about this is that they are not only refusing to stop their muddle-headed, counterproductive, pro-Obama activism that has caused so many normal Americans to reject their BS, they’re actually redoubling their efforts to spin, sneer, smear, and surreptitiously cover up their blatant mistakes as they make them.

Tweedledum and Tweedledummer

Few have ever been under any illusion that John McCain was a particularly brilliant individual. He graduated towards the bottom of his Naval Academy class, 894th out of 899, but then, one has to be quite intelligent to get into the Naval Academy in the first place, even as a legacy with heavy hitters behind you. And once one is in, one has to have the intellectual firepower to survive there; the heavy hitters don’t do a plebe any good once he’s at Annapolis.

This isn’t a theoretical statement either. I have a friend who didn’t make it there despite having more heavy hitters behind him than John McCain. And that friend has more than enough brainpower to burn; like most things, success usually requires as much determination as capacity.

Ivy League institutions, on the other hand, have been practicing aggressive affirmative action for decades. If Yale and Harvard degrees aren’t enough to protect George Bush, with his 1206 SAT, from accusations of stupidity, Columbia and Harvard degrees can’t be sufficient to protect Obama from the same, especially in light of the suspicious way in which his test scores are mysteriously unavailable to the public. In short, the logical conclusion is that while Obama doesn’t actually have a two-digit IQ, he’s far less intelligent than most people who have made it to his level, and far less bright than most people assume on the basis of his sheepskins.

While an accomplished speaker from texts, Obama isn’t articulate, in fact, he’s actually worse than George w. Bush, who has impressive elocution issues. It’s becomingly increasingly obvious that Obama is thin-skinned and petty; his response to the poorly-targeted attacks on Palin and McCain has not been to stop and rethink his failed strategy, but rather to amp up the volume. His campaign is committing weekly self-disembowelments, the most recent being an attempt to completely turn off all the elderly voters – the most reliable voters in the electorate – by accusing John McCain of not knowing how to email. Setting aside the total tactical pointlessness of an attack that is at best meaningless to anyone who isn’t a 15-year old girl, it also reveals a total failure to do even the most elementary research considering that McCain has a pretty good excuse for not using email – he can’t type due to the torture he received in Vietnam.

It is remotely possible that Obama isn’t an affirmative action beneficiary. We don’t know – we can’t know – until he proves otherwise by releasing his test scores to the media. However, there is an increasing and near-conclusive body of evidence that indicates Obama not only isn’t experienced enough to be president, he probably isn’t even smart enough to be president.

Which, of course, is precisely why I’m hoping the American electorate is dumb enough to choose the magical negritude of Tweedledummer. Since Americans collectively have negligible interest in anything that might help them avoid their societal plunge off the cliff, I’m primarily looking to see them maximize my entertainment experience.

UPDATE – Ace of Spades discovers a Forbes article that shows the “doesn’t know how to use a computer” ad called “Still” is even dumber than it appeared at second glance: “In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate. Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the U.S. Senate’s savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, Cindy. The injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type. Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop.”

Attacking the opponent’s strength works for Bill Belicheat because he’s a football genius. It’s clearly not going to work for an affirmative action presidential candidate too dumb to even realize he’s doing it.

The future belongs to those who show up

Spengler points out that there’s absolutely no point in defending Georgia and Ukraine, so there’s no reason to interfere with Russia playing games in its backyard:

The fact is that there won’t be any Georgians or Ukrainians in the not-too-distant future. By coincidence, Washington’s two favorite beacons of liberty happen to be the two countries with the world’s fastest rate of population decline. By mid-century they will have barely half as many inhabitants as they do today, and half of those who remain will be elderly. Hardly [any] men of military age and women of child-bearing age will remain. Their economies will implode long before the mid-century mark, as soaring retirement costs crush state budgets, and young people emigrate to escape the burden of supporting the elderly.

If they don’t care enough about their nations to propagate, then why in the names of Patrick Henry, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson should Americans die for them? As usual, Spengler is three steps ahead of the curve.

Clarification

It is unbelievable how right-wing bloggers have spent the last 24 hours chucking spears at Senator Obama when he was doing nothing more than calling a spade a spade the other day while attacking those Republican blackguards attempting to carjack his message of change. They clearly did not correctly understand the senator because he is so unexpectedly articulate. And clean.

If the blogosphere would have waited just one cotton-pickin’ moment to think about it, they would have realized two things. First, when Obama referred to “lipstick on a pig”, he was only referring to John McCain’s attempt to remake himself. Second, the only reference to Sarah Palin intended by the senator, who lives in the Gangster Disciples capital of Chicago, was the bit about the fish.

Because, you know, she’s from Alaska, where fishing is a major industry.

How to win the women’s vote

Doesn’t this guy have a whole horde of advisors? And none of them warned him that the lipstick and pitbull line probably wasn’t the best one from which to riff?

“You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig,” Obama said during a town-hall style event here Tuesday night.

And we all know how men of Muslim faith, like Obama, feel about pigs. As for his daily gaffe approach to campaigning, it’s become abundantly clear that despite the media’s praise for his ability as a speaker, this guy doesn’t speak well at all. His gift consists of his voice and his ability to read speeches, not dynamic communication skills. You’ll also note that we haven’t seen his SAT scores either… chances are high that he was an affirmative action Ivy Leaguer. Speaking of piggies, this is why the Democrats aren’t going to able to make the “It’s the Economy Stupid” argument this time around as one might have expected given the collapse of the housing finance system:
