The June 2026 memorandum that closed the main phase of the war already carried a commitment to reduce US assets in the Gulf. The Council on Foreign Relations and a stack of defense analyses make the same case: the war exposed the vulnerability of Gulf basing, and the pressure to reposition is mounting. Sunday’s exchange feeds that dynamic directly. Each time Iran demonstrates it can put missiles and drones over Al Udeid and the Jordanian fields — even when most are allegedly knocked down — it raises the cost of parking high-value assets there and strengthens the internal Pentagon argument for dispersal.
