It has begun III

I have to say, I’m increasingly underwhelmed by the case for evolution being made thus far. In fact, I would say that I have never been less convinced of the verity of evolutionary theory than I am now, especially in light of the difficulty most of the true believers have demonstrated in understanding the nature of my questions.

I found myself wondering if Scott might be a bit distracted with the coming school year in light of his response to question (5):

Is it correct to say that “we just don’t see clear evidence of speciation in the fossil record”? This appears to contradict what I have been taught about evolution since elementary school.

I can’t really answer that, Vox, unless I know the context of the quote. We can certainly infer speciation in the fossil record, and there really are transitional forms.

Inferring is not “clear evidence”, of course, more importantly, I was quoting Scott himself from a comment made on this blog made 8.16.07 – 12:35 am. But it seems the answer is, no, evolutionists do not have clear evidence of speciation in the fossil record.

Scott punted on (3) regarding “margin of error”, which I respect as an honest response, although the question is a legitimate one. If you’ll excuse a digression, let me explain its significance with an analogy. One of the reasons I reject Keynesian macroeconomic theory is that its demonstrable margin of error is too great for it to utilized for the purposes to which it is put. As I showed in this 2002 column, the margin of error exceeds the amount of the information upon which vital decisions are being made. (Note- I was wrong in 2002, the SPX only got down to 800; it made it to 1555 before its recent tanking.) From what I’ve seen of evolutionary projections, its margin of errors are even greater than those seen in macroeconomics. Since this level of inaccuracy causes me to dismiss macroeconomics as a science, it leads me to similarly dismiss evolution. Obviously, if it can be shown that the macroevolutionary margin of error is smaller than that of macroeconomics, I’d be happy to reconsider. In any case, we’re probably fortunate that macroevolutionists have far less policy influence than macroeconomists.

As for (2) Talk Origins, consensus seems to be that it’s reliable enough, so given my straightforward use of the data presented there, I’m still wondering how I am supposed to have misused or misrepresented it. Scott did not understand the significance of (1), as it does not involve whether evolution is an origins science or an operational science, but rather if it was capable of doing more than what financial analysts call backtesting. The answer, based on what Scott and others have said, is not really. Evolutionists don’t seem to understand that most of what they call successful “predictions” of past events are not empirically testable predictions, they are merely the confirmation of inferences. This gap-filling is good, but it’s still backtesting. Moreover, evolution’s track record is absolutely terrible in this regard, with far more misses than hits. There’s a good discussion of the underlying issue in Scott’s comments here. I actually tend to like the evolutionist’s comparison of evolution to meteorology; although he meant it as a defense, of course, I have little regard for the current state of either. It reminds me of the Talk Origins defense, which is that if evolution isn’t a science, well, then archeology isn’t either. Okay, fine, they’re both not sciences… are we all agreed? Can we throw in psychology while we’re at it?

Scott answered the detailed aspects of (4) but neglected to provide an answer to the most important part, namely, what is a “mendel”? What is the average rate of genetic speciation? If it happens, then it happens at various rates, of which there must be an average. Moreover, this average must be in line with the fossil record and the various geological datings, not merely “allow for it” as Talk Origins presently describes the variance in morphological rates. Too fast is as inaccurate as too slow. Now, “we don’t know yet” is an acceptable answer, but then, the correct thing to do is shut up, go away and figure it out before expecting anyone to accept it on faith. For Darwin’s sake, it’s been 250 years and we’re still having problems getting people to understand that lowering price increases demand – see the health care debate for details – and evolutionists expect us to accept on faith something that they themselves can’t answer, let alone quantify?

Regarding (6), Scott again has a reasonable reply although I’m not quite sure what the reminder that populations evolve is supposed to accomplish. Even if populations evolve, the DNA mutations which demonstrate this evolution can only be found in individuals.

Individuals don’t evolve, populations do, and attempting to predict when and how one population achieves sufficient genomic reorganization that it can no longer produce fertile hybrids with other populations—that’s a tall order. So Pintopolis is incorrect if he assumes that someone is cataloging all these new species that Vox thinks we would be seeing appear regularly if evolution is true.

On the other hand, Vox, I don’t know how you arrived at that figure but my intuition it’s almost certainly too low. There are probably more than that number of speciation events every month. But we are unlikely to detect them, for the following reasons:

a) most of these new species are short-lived

b) most of these new species are bacteria or other organisms whose numbers are vast, but whose lives are largely unmonitored by the likes of us

c) speciation doesn’t mean a dramatic, obvious phenoyptic change in most cases—it’s merely a state of genetic incompatibility with other populations. Two organisms could look astonishingly similar, and yet be members of different species—-thus we are unlikely to be able to do anything more than infer the approximate moment when such a population crossed the evolutionary Rubicon

I agree with Scott on the predicted number being low; it was based on conservative assumptions. And the task is certainly a tall order, but one based on a perfectly reasonable expectation. We can’t expect to find every new species as it appears due to the problems that Scott mentions, but if one is popping up nearly every other day, we should have no problem finding one or two and demonstrating that they are a new species that did not previously exist, assuming that this is, in fact, happening.

It’s also interesting that despite defining his case on genetic evolution, Scott is quick to retreat to the very fossil record that the modern synthesis to which he subscribes has [largely, somewhat, completely?] disavowed. This is the very aspect of the strange nebulousness of the discipline that caused me to become skeptical of it in the first place.

Scott hasn’t even begun to pose his positive case for evolution, but on the basis of his answers so far, I am convinced that when it comes to the current theory of evolution, scientists are writing checks that they simply are not capable of cashing. While I don’t deny that it’s a tall order to expect the same sort of precision and results out of evolution that we get out of chemistry, physics, and yes, even economics – and no, my dear evolutionist, supply-side economics is absolutely NOT Austrian – that’s neither my responsibility nor my concern.

But I hope this continues to be an interesting discussion and I commend Scott, Pintopolis and other defenders of the discipline commenting here for the civil manner with which they have comported themselves.


Worse than Nazis

In which I answer Ms Wade’s question:

The point is not that abortion (or adoption) would have made for better comedy. (Although, if one wanted to make a gross-out comedy, why not make it about abortion?) The point is the insidious pro-life message of the film: Even dope-smoking, misogynist morons (the antithesis of the pro-life contingent) “know” that abortion is wrong. Where does that place those of us who support abortion rights? Or choose to have one? Or (gasp) think that abortion, in some cases, might be good?

I’d say just above Pol Pot and Mao, but below Hitler, Choibalsan and Bierut.


Not as pure as the driven snow

I think we scientists can shift the focus here all we want and blame the funding situation or public perception. But in the end, we are the ones largely to blame for doing poor jobs at explaining our work to the public and for not having good leadership showing how important basic science is. The fact is, basic science needs to be promoted more and more to the public. Instead, we take the easy way out and unfortunately lie about the applied aspects of our work.

As incredible as it may seem to the horror-stricken evolutionist, I’m actually a pretty big fan of non-applied science; I just dislike scientists and their all-too-common idea, inherited from the philosophers, that the world would be a better place if everyone else would just shut up and let them run it.

But this sort of thing is why those who insist that the noble and sacred profession is above all reproach tend to make me laugh. And you’d think they’d realize that having people like Dr. Myers running around and shouting at everyone about how stupid they are for not sharing his belief in evolution and his lack of belief in God isn’t exactly the best advertisement for science or scientists, especially not in the eyes of those stupid people who are taxed to pay for his salary.


Oh, for Darwin’s sake

Billy offers an amusing treatise on how to deal with my poor arguments. Sadly, he makes a demonstrably false accusation here:

Watch out for use of technical language in the same posts where he blathers on about how he’s a layman and hasn’t read much about this. He’s covering the fact that a) he’s read more than he says, but wants to make it look as if he’s just smart, and b) he doesn’t know as much as he needs to.

I have read the following books dealing with evolution in some capacity: The Selfish Gene, Unweaving the Rainbow, A Devil’s Chaplain, Darwin’s Dangerous Idea, and Freedom Evolves, all of them in the last six months. I own and have read parts of Marc Hauser’s Moral Minds and John Maynard Smith’s Evolution and the Theory of Games; I have also read Consciousness Explained although I’m not sure that really applies here. As to whether that makes me an expert on the subject, I leave it up to the evolutionists.

I have also read three or four pages at Talk Origins starting with Theobald’s 29 proofs for Macroevolution page, plus the one page on morphological rates written by the guy criticizing him. Whatever technical language I use is simply stuff I’m picking up from you all, either in Internet posts or stuff that makes the news. It’s not like it’s that hard to figure out what the jargon means given the context, and it takes about two seconds to look it up even when you can’t.

Perhaps I don’t know as much as I need to… that’s one of the things Scott and I were curious about. Scott already knows I’m not an idiot, but it’s certainly amusing to see how his fellow evolutionists are willing to invent new theories in order to cling to their belief that anyone who is more intelligent than they are absolutely must think as they do. Ah, my dear rational empiricists, how quickly you forget that observation trumps logic!

But why are you all so insecure? Seriously, is it your own occasional doubts that trouble you so or have you evolved into herd animals?


It has begun #2

Scott, always more civil towards skeptics than most of his fellow evolutionists, replies on Monkey Trials:

PZ thinks Vox’s argument is, well, phony. He claims that Vox has lifted a remark from Gingerich as to the amount of generations it might take to evolve an elephant from a mouse (Vox didn’t specify sources in his original post), and he thinks that the argument depends upon a distorted understanding of how biologists measure rates of evolution. Whatever one thinks of this argument, I have to admit that I haven’t heard this particular line of reasoning before. I wonder what Phil Gingerich might think about this? I think I shall ask him!

Vox, with an update to his original post, thinks PZ didn’t read his argument very carefully and suggests that evolutionary experts should provide a prediction as to how long such a transition might actually take place, at the end of which time we should collect our Nobel Prizes.

At any rate, Vox used both a personal anecdote as well as this example as an explanation of the gnawing misgivings he has about evolution and natural selection. I’m still not sure what he thinks the actual status of these items shall be from his reply, but (no surprise) I think we can rule out any pan-adapationist orientation from Vox. Before I reply further, I think I would like to give Vox a chance to ask me any sort of follow-up question on this topic.

Dr. PZ is exhibiting his customary intellectual clumsiness. How is my argument “phony” in any sense of the word? And one wonders how he derives innumeracy from a single example of correctly applied math, especially when he managed to come up with a different result. It seems math is hard for butterfly collectors! As for the the information, it came, as I stated in the original post, from Talk Origins, specifically Douglas Theobald’s 29+ Evidences for Macroevolution, section 5.7, which cites Gingerich, Reznick, Williams, Rightmire and others.

Anyhow, Scott asks if I have any questions for him. Here’s a few simple ones to start:

1. Do you understand the difference between a historical model and a predictive model? If you don’t mind, would you quickly explain to those having problems understanding the difference why this is relevant to a discussion of evolution? And which type of model, in your opinion, is a better description of the current state of Neo-Darwinian theory?

2. Is Talk Origins a reliable source? I seem to have come under an amount of criticism for relying on it. If it is unreliable, can you suggest an acceptable one?

3. Is the acceptable margin of error greater for economics or evolution? (It’s much larger for both than people realize.) What margin of error is too great to allow a discipline to be reasonably considered a science?

4. A change in the frequency of alleles within a population is the genetic definition of evolution. What is the genetic definition of speciation? Are nucleotide substitutions to be regarded as the genetic equivalent to darwins? If not, what would be a reasonable definition of a “mendel” that would allow us to track the average rate of genetic evolution as one species transforms into another?

5. Is it correct to say that “we just don’t see clear evidence of speciation in the fossil record”? This appears to contradict what I have been taught about evolution since elementary school.

6. Based on the number of known species, the aforementioned darwins/year required for a significant transformation and the average rate of darwins observed in the wild, I calculate there should be an average of 194.6 166.5 new species evolving each year. Is this correct? If not, how many new species evolve in the average year? Perhaps PZ would care to double-check my math…. (The math was fine, but I was thinking in terms of time, not velocity, on the first run through.)

And for those evolutionary fundamentalists who can’t seem to understand that this is a debate about EVOLUTION, please understand that however tempting it might be to avoid uncomfortable questions and turn the discussion towards Creation Science, Intelligent Design, game design, God, George Bush or the Iraqi Occupation, none of those subjects have anything to do with my debate with Scott. Evolution must stand or fall on its own merits; to assume the inherent truth of anything based on one’s ignorance of an alternative is a basic logical fallacy.

It has begun

Scott Hatfield poses the following questions:

here’s my first set of thoughts for discussion: in your opinion, what is the status of evolution by natural selection as an explanatory model? What sort of explanation is it? What, if anything, does it explain better than other models?

Perhaps I can explain some of my objections to evolution from personal experience. You see, I have witnessed many things over the four hundred years since I was first given the Gift by the Lady Annabel Moutrie-Blackett – wait, we’re not supposed to talk about that?

Okay, well, skipping ahead a few hundred years, I developed a clever little stock analysis system that turned out to be somewhat of a reinvention of the wheel known as the Elliott Wave. Going back to the mid-1980s, it called many of the major highs and all of the lows, and was impressive enough that a few European banks were very interested in using it. When asked for a demonstration, I made use of it to triple their money in a matter of weeks. They were impressed, especially when I used it to correctly call a significant low.

Unfortunately, within four months, I’d begun to suspect that the system didn’t work quite as well as I thought it did. And within another three, I was sure it didn’t. Fortunately, I managed to figure this out before any of my banking clients put any serious funds at risk, but it taught me a very important lesson in the difference between a historical model and a predictive one.

From my admittedly layman’s perspective, the Neo-Darwinian Theory of evolution looks remarkably like a historical model, except that it doesn’t explain historical events half as well as my stock system did. It’s not a reliably predictive model like the Law of Supply and Demand and it doesn’t provide what I consider to be convincing answers to simple questions like why one population evolves and another does not when they share the same environment; declaring one to have reached equilibrium while the other is unstable is simply not convincing over the lengths of time that are supposed to be involved.

Based on the information from Talk Origins, it could theoretically take as little as 20 years to forcibly evolve a species of mouse into a species of elephant given the rate of darwins observed in the laboratory and the number required for that level of transformation. And yet, after 150 years of constant refinement, evolution still appears to be more smoke, mirrors and revision of the historical model rather than the foundation of a predictive one. I don’t argue that the concept of natural selection modifying behavior and attributes over time can’t be useful, even valuable, we’ve used it in artificial intelligence systems in my games for more than a decade now.

But to place evolution on the same level of confidence as Austrian economic theory, let alone Newtonian physics? Given the imprecision, the margins of error and the level of overt speculation that always seems to be involved, I don’t see that it’s justified.

And while I’m not saying the criticism is misplaced, I do think there’s a tremendous amount of irony involved when an evolutionist criticizes a creation scientist for the premise including the result.

UPDATE – PZ still can’t read:

That’s so darn close to what he demands that I have to assume this is where he got his mangled expectation. So Day takes a very high estimate for a sustained rate of evolution, divides the duration by 500, and then rebukes scientists for not replicating this theoretical experiment in the lab. Unless we greatly increase the period of indentured servitude for grad students, as well as the duration of human civilizations, I don’t see it happening….

See what you’re in for, Scott? You’ve engaged an innumerate incompetent who will blithely make quantitative claims on subjects on which he knows nothing, and you’re going to have to make arguments based on a fairly broad knowledge of the scientific literature and considerable background explanation to refute him.

If PZ was capable of doing math – I know, I know, he’s a butterfly collector so you can’t expect that much out of him – then he would have noticed that I didn’t randomly choose to divide by 500. The 20 years for the hypothetical elephant mouse was simply based on the observation that if an evolutionary rate of 400 darwins are enough to transform a mouse into an elephant in 10,000 years, then a rate of 200,000 darwins as has already been observed in the laboratory would suffice to get the job done in 20 years. 280,000!=200,000.

The amusing thing about evolutionists is the way they are always making assertions and then dancing away from them the moment anyone dares to take them seriously. I don’t care about the elephant-mouse, that’s just the example given by Talk Origins; if there’s an error in the darwin rate, take it up with them. The obvious thing to do is to pick something that’s more closely related; Scott and PZ are the evolutionary experts, so they can inform us what is the fastest species-to-species evolution in terms of darwins/year and we can figure out exactly how long it will take for them to win their Nobel prize. Of course, this has almost surely been done many times before with fast-breeding animals like fruit flies, one can only assume the absence of reported results is because they haven’t managed to turn it into anything but a mutated fruit fly yet.

PZ’s problem is that because the theory and the discipline isn’t really a science, getting specific makes them very uncomfortable. I think there’s a better case for arguing that economics, which is more rigorous and demands much greater precision, is not a science than there is for arguing that evolutionary biology is one.

Regardless, as long as Dr. Myers is arguing for it, we can rest assured that he’ll be convincing more people that evolution is a myth than the other way around. As Leonardo is supposed to have said: “Where there is shouting there is no science.” What PZ calls “cherry-picking”, other people call “noticing the glaring problems”. I only highlighted the most obvious, the other serious problem is that according to the rates, there should be a lot more evolution than has been “observed”. That’s cited as support for the theory, the problem is that in a real science, the numbers have to actually add up, not just leave sufficient room for your pet idea.

If evolutionists built airplanes, they wouldn’t get off the ground long enough to crash.

This isn’t my case against evolution. I was asked a few simple questions and I gave a few simple answers. I just completed my case against the New Atheists; it’s 110,000 words long with something like 500 footnotes. If I ever decide to make a serious case against evolution, it will be decidely more detailed and methodical than this blog post.


Offended by English

Fresh from a brief encounter with sanity, Amynda slips back into irrationality:

Your use of the word “promiscuous” offends me, Petey. I prefer the phrase “doesn’t buy into the double standard”. Sluts are good people. Women who view sex as a means to pleasure and themselves as sexual subjects are smart and to be looked up to, not shamed. Women who buy into the idea that their bodies belong to men and therefore their sexual choices need to be made strictly with the desires of some prudish, misogynist they want to marry later (for reasons that make no sense) need help, not being held up as the role model.

Promiscuous is neither a difficult nor an offensive word, it is merely descriptive:

1. Having casual sexual relations frequently with different partners; indiscriminate in the choice of sexual partners.
2. Lacking standards of selection; indiscriminate.
3. Casual; random.

Since left-wingers believe from the very bottom of their bleeding little hearts that discrimination is bad, bad, bad, it’s peculiar that having their behavior described as indiscriminate should be offensive. But to be offended by a literal description of the very behavior they openly champion isn’t merely strange, it’s meta-weird.

Now, sluts can be perfectly delightful, especially the cheerful variety. The angry, self-loathing ones, not so much. But the negative quality of an idea is not dictated by its identifying label. No amount of feminist attempts to pervert the language are going to change that.

If the truth – or the mere language – makes you uncomfortable or angry, that’s a reliable sign that there is something seriously wrong with your thinking.

I hadn’t imagined that the omniscient, omnipotent creator of the heavens and earth could be an advanced version of a guy who spends his weekends building model railroads or overseeing video-game worlds like the Sims. But now it seems quite possible. In fact, if you accept a pretty reasonable assumption of Dr. Bostrom’s, it is almost a mathematical certainty that we are living in someone else’s computer simulation.

You say “highly evolved”, I say “levelled-up”.

The wife-from-Hell has now been released after serving seven whole months for shooting her sleeping husband in the back. No doubt she’s eager to start dating again; imagine being the poor unsuspecting guy on that first date. Or even worse, imagine the sort of saps who will know what’s up, but buy into the little coward’s sob story.
