An honest secularist

It’s always interesting to read David Berlinski’s acerbic comments, since his secularist criticism of scientists and professional atheists not only parallels my own, but tends to confound those who believe all secularists should shut up, stop thinking, and obediently follow the instructions of their self-appointed superiors. This interview is amusingly unprofessional, as the interviewer seems to think that he is debating Berlinski rather than interviewing him, but as you can see, the more fool he:

Why do you think the debate about Darwin’s theory of evolution has taken on such a nasty turn?

Nasty, eh? If so, the nastiness is not entirely
ecumenical. As far as I can tell, only one side is now occupying the
gutter, even though the gutter is, as gutters generally are, more than
spacious enough for two. But you raise a good question. Why are
Darwinian biologists so outraged? Like the San Andreas fault, the
indignation conspicuous at blogs such as The Panda’s Thumb or Talk Reason is now visible from outer space.

There is a lot at stake, obviously. Money, prestige, power, influence –
they all play a role. Darwinism is an ideological system and when such
systems come under threat, their supporters react in predictable ways.
Freedom of thought very often appears as an inconvenience to those with a
position to protect. Look at the attempts made to humiliate Rick
Sternberg at the Smithsonian Institute, or the campaign now underway to
do the same thing to Guillermo Gonzalez at Iowa State. There is nothing
surprising in all this. I myself believe that the world would be
suitably improved if those with whom I disagreed were simply to shut up.
What is curious is how quickly the Darwinian establishment has begun to
appear vulnerable ….

Not to scientists …

No, perhaps not. But to everyone else. Consider the latest Pew poll. “Two-thirds of Americans,” the New York Times
reported, “say that creationism should be taught alongside evolution in
public schools.” But even among those quite persuaded of Darwin’s
theory, “18 percent said that evolution was ‘guided by a supreme
being.’” Now these are astonishing figures. They represent an authentic
popular revolt against elite thought. I cannot remember anything like
it. The fact that so many Darwinian biologists are utterly tone-deaf
when it comes to debate has hardly helped their case. It is no small
thing to have appeared before the American public in a way that suggests
both illimitable arrogance and scientific insecurity.

How would you react to the argument that Dawkins has made that any form of religion that goes beyond the scientific facts about the universe really represents a form of brainwashing …

He’s probably right. Most education is a form of brainwashing – so much better in French, by the way, lavage de cerveau. Give a child to the Jesuits, they say, and ten years later the man will cringe when he spots the Cross. But look, ten years or so spent studying physics is a pretty effective form of brainwashing as well. You emerge into the daylight blinking weakly and talking about an endless number of universes stacked on top of one another like an old-fashioned Maine pancake breakfast. Or you start babbling inanely about how meaningless the universe is. But if you ask me just who is the more credulous, the more suggestible, the dopier, the more perfectly prepared to convey absurdity to an almost inconceivable pitch of personal enthusiasm – a well-trained Jesuit or a Ph.D. in quantum physics, I’ll go with the physicist every time. There is nothing these people won’t believe. No wonder used-car salesmen love them. Biologists are, of course, worse. Tell them that in the future Richard Dawkins is going to conduct a personal invasion of Hell in order to roust the creationists, and The Panda’s Thumb will at once start vibrating with ticket sales.

Perhaps this isn’t the most productive of topics to pursue …

Well, no, it’s not productive if you’re trying to convince everyone that biologists can be relied upon because physicists have very accurate models, anyhow. This post brought to you on the basis of John C. Wright’s recommendation.

Surrender

Invade the world, invite the world, elect the world:

Abdi Warsame made history Tuesday by becoming the highest elected Somali in the country, winning a seat on the City Council in a landslide. Two decades after a wave of East Africans arrived in Minneapolis to escape civil war, they emerged as a political force to elect one of their own for the first time to City Hall, jumping out of their seats at a Cedar-Riverside theater to cheer, clap and embrace one another as Warsame took the stage.

It was part of a sweeping turnover on the City Council, where seven new members will be sworn in next year. Two other challengers knocked out incumbents by a 2-1 margin in wards spanning Uptown, the North Loop and Northeast, and the council seemed likely to have its first Hmong and Hispanic members when all votes are counted….

Warsame secured 64 percent of first-place votes for the Sixth Ward seat. He defeated 12-year Council Member Robert Lilligren, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe who strove to show that he could connect with East African voters even if he didn’t share the same cultural background.

Voter turnout in the ward exploded since the last council race in 2009, and Warsame won with three times as many votes as Lilligren garnered in his last election.

Warsame, 35, left Somalia as a child and spent much of his life in England. He moved to Minneapolis in 2006 and heads the tenant association for the Riverside Plaza, the high-rises that house 4,000 East Africans.

Mogadishu on the Mississippi’s newly elected leader is not an American. Not in any sense of the word except the legal one. He’s lived in America less than half the time that I’ve lived in Europe. Does anyone seriously believe that this man has any understanding of the 18th century English political principles that define what America is, let alone any genuine allegiance to them?

Marines were sent to Somalia to prevent Somalis ruling over Somalis. Now Somalis are ruling over Americans. In what used to be America.

Americans did not defend their liberty and now they are getting the non-American government they deserve.

Ilk: the exam

ProProfs has really mutilated their embedding functionality, so you’ll have to click on the link to take that very important quiz: Is You Ilk?  Take it to determine whether you are a regular reader, Ilk, or an old school member of The Dread Ilk. It is recommended that you take the test before reading the comments, as there is some discussion of the answers in them.

Keep in mind that Ilkhood isn’t a membership in a club. It’s neither a status thing nor a seniority chart. At its core, it is a state of mind. If you have what it takes, it is what you will naturally become here over time, whether you begin as a fan, a critic, a bemused observer, or a moderately alarmed passer-by.

Evidence for nature

It appears “gayface” is a legitimate scientific concept.

Previous studies have shown that homosexual men differ from heterosexual men in several somatic traits and lay people accurately attribute sexual orientation based on facial images. Thus, we may predict that morphological differences between faces of homosexual and heterosexual individuals can cue to sexual orientation. The main aim of this study was to test for possible differences in facial shape between heterosexual and homosexual men. Further, we tested whether self-reported sexual orientation correlated with sexual orientation and masculinity-femininity attributed from facial images by independent raters. In Study 1, we used geometric morphometrics to test for differences in facial shape between homosexual and heterosexual men. The analysis revealed significant shape differences in faces of heterosexual and homosexual men. Homosexual men showed relatively wider and shorter faces, smaller and shorter noses, and rather massive and more rounded jaws, resulting in a mosaic of both feminine and masculine features.

If substantiated by further research, this would tend to suggest that homosexual orientation is not only a physical abnormality, but is at least potentially fixable with either genotherapy or prenatal treatment. And just as there are far fewer children with Downs Syndrome than there were prior to prenatal tests, it’s not hard to imagine that there will be even fewer homosexuals once the condition is more fully understood by medical science.

This, of course, would provoke the mother of all activist storms in the West. But that may not be particularly relevant, as in the East, it will be adopted as a matter of course.

Mailvox: where to find motivation

AL is seeking to get out of a rut:

Do you have any words of advice or inspiration for someone in their mid-20’s that feels the drain of being stuck in a rut?  I’ve found myself and others around that age stuck in the same sort of endless downward spiral.  The stress of work and trying to “make it” simply makes it seem too hard to work on the things necessary to get out of the rut.

I’m not sure if you’ve ever been in a situation like that, but I am sure you’ve observed others that have been.  Hell, I get the impression more than a few of the Dread Ilk find themselves in such a mess.

I think that most people start to lose any sight of their dreams at this point in life, or when they are 35 or 40 always wished they had made a few moves to change their situation when they were 25 and still had time.

Is it the economy that’s really making things hard?  Is it just a lack of motivation?  I don’t know what it is, but I’m determined to get out of this and I’m sure others that read Vox Popoli feel the same.

It is always hard to separate the urgent from the important. My rule is to always devote at least 15 percent of my work time to things with long-term possibilities. Such as, for example, my fiction. It’s not my job, it’s not my career, and it’s not a reliable way to make a living, but every book has upside potential, however remote the odds, whereas the average contract job that pays the bills does not.

It’s so very easy for hard-working young men to simply put their heads down and think that by working hard, they will naturally get ahead. But we’re not living in a Horatio Alger novel and it doesn’t work that way anymore, in part due to the economy, in part due to the feminized workplace, and in part due to the increased societal imbalances of wealth distribution due to increased government intervention in the economy. Those who win, win bigger now, but fewer people win.

One of the factors in the mid-life crisis AL mentions is the realization that time is running out and one’s options are increasingly limited. There is no more time for mistakes, for finding yourself, and for screwing around, what you do will dictate the way you will live for the rest of your life. And the sooner you understand that, the more time you have to actually do something, to take several chances, to fail, to fail again, and then to ultimately succeed.

Failure is the norm. I can’t stress this enough! You’re usually going to fail, so fail as fast and as often as you can, because failure is the seed for future success. By the same token, because it is the norm, it is nothing to fear. Nothing! And each time, you learn more and you learn how to go about the next opportunity more effectively.

I can’t tell AL how to motivate himself because everyone is motivated differently. Motivation tends to be related to how we surmount our natural weaknesses. Because my primary weakness is laziness, I tend to be most effectively fueled by negativity and by competition. For example, I very much doubt I would have been driven to make VP a more popular blog than Whatever had the competitive comparison not been repeatedly waved in my face. There were days when I didn’t feel like blogging, there are still days when I don’t feel like it. But I do it every single time, and fortunately, the motivation will be there as long as Whatever is deemed to be a competitor of some kind.

It’s the same motivation I draw upon on the soccer field when it’s the second half, I’m worn out, I’ve just sprinted 50 yards down the sideline to be cut off by the sweeper, and I look back to see an opposing striker and the left midfielder marked by our right defender at midfield as the goalie punts the ball towards them. Part of me is arguing, quite logically, that I’m too old and too tired to run, and it’s not as if the World Cup is on the line anyhow. And then I hear that snarling voice inside saying “that’s my guy and that motherfucker isn’t going to score on my fucking watch!” And then, somehow, the energy to run back magically appears. Which is why, in ten games this season, (five of them defeats), no left midfielder or outside defender has scored a single goal. I don’t think I’ve even allowed a single uncontested shot from that side, with the exception of a free kick resulting from a defender’s foul.

But that’s my motivation. I know what it is and I know how to draw upon it. AL has to figure out what works for him. Maybe it is praise. Maybe it is money. Maybe it is a sense of serving others. Maybe it is social status or even just pure envy. It can be positive or negative, but it has to be identified before it can be purposefully utilized. If AL is determined to get out of the rut, he will get out, he simply has to determine what gives him the strength to run when he would rather walk.

Running down John Scalzi II

Nearly a year ago, I observed that this blog appeared to be the verge of catching up to McRapey’s Magnum Opus, The Most Popular Blog in Science Fiction with 50,000 DAILY READERS, in terms of its pageview traffic. This was very surprising to me, as for some time before then, various trolls and rabbits had been insistent that my views were irrelevant because no one was interested in them. They were forthright in declaring that only a few thousand extremist right-wing outliers read VP, which couldn’t possibly bear comparison with a massively popular blog like Whatever.

As recently as 26 December, 2012, I still believed the hype. I honestly thought McRapey must have meant “visits” rather than “views” when he reported 8 million views for Whatever in 2012. After all, I knew my own blogs had nearly 7.8 million views.

“Is it credible that the readership for VP+AG is actually that close to
the Whatever readership?  No, I don’t think so.  I think Scalzi is using
the term “view” improperly and should be using “visit”.”

Ah, how innocent we were! Despite being John Scalzi’s bête noire, I didn’t have a proper grasp of what a lying, self-promoting little snake he is. These days, thanks to Anonymous Conservative, we now understand exactly what McRapey and the other rabbits were doing. They’re like demons constantly whispering “you don’t matter, nobody loves you, why don’t you just give up” into the ears of bullied teenagers.

There were some readers who were skeptical of my observations concerning traffic, pointing, not unreasonably, to Alexa. I readily admitted that VP was still considerably behind Whatever in the Alexa rankings, although I was starting to understand that this was merely an artifact of the ranking system being less reliable than Google Analytics: “For what it’s worth, Alexa has scalzi.com, which hosts Whatever, at 12,996 in the USA.  Vox Popoli is 29,426.  Alpha Game is 73,183.”

So, in light of that, perhaps you can understand that I was a little amused when, after having exposed McRapey’s false claims of popularity earlier this fall, I observed this in the Alexa rankings today.

scalzi.com
109,589 Global rank
44,648 USA rank
4,857 sites linking in

voxday.blogspot.com
108,511 Global rank
22,967 USA rank
920 sites linking in

alphagameplan.blogspot.com
179,597 Global rank
53,907 USA rank
311 sites linking in

There are one or two interesting details one can observe there beyond the fact that Vox Popoli has now passed up a declining Whatever in Alexa terms, both globally and in the USA. McRapey’s self-promotion appears to be considerable, but inefficient, as he requires thousands more site links, and tens of thousands more Twitter followers to produce fewer, less-engaged blog readers. Despite the Chief Gamma Rabbit’s occasional attempts to denigrate Game, one can’t help but notice that Alpha Game is also rapidly catching up to the warren.

John Scalzi is a big fat fraud. He’s the Bernie Madoff of science fiction, having built his Hubbardesque SF career with smoke, mirrors, and sleight of hand. The fact is that leftists are seldom as popular, as influential, or as inevitable as they claim themselves to be. They readily resort to The Big Lie whenever it serves their interests, and their interest is usually focused on exaggerating their importance and their numbers. What I have learned from this is to never, EVER take a Leftist’s claims on faith. Always verify them, and quite often you will be surprised to discover in the process how brazenly they tried to slip one past you.

Now, I have no doubt that Scalzi’s remaining rabbits will hasten to move the goalposts yet again and point out that he sells more books than I do. And that, at least, is true. For now. Of course, in light of how the other metrics to which they previously appealed have tumbled one by one, how long can they be certain the final one will last? Winter is coming… and so is Quantum Mortis.

Download the VP toolbarOn a tangential note, I also discovered Alexa has a custom toolbar that is in beta, played around with it, and was a little shocked to find out that it is rather useful. In addition to giving an easy way to search this blog from anywhere and providing access to my updated game links and book recommendations, one can navigate more rapidly between the various comment threads by using the RSS feed pull-down menu. Anyhow, if you want to check it out and help me promote VP, click on the graphic to the left.

And if you have any ideas for improving the toolbar within the framework of what Alexa permits, please let me know. I have no idea why the text doesn’t always display the most recent post instead of a randomly selected one, but it is in beta and I suspect it might be a Feedburner thing anyway since Feedburner doesn’t always pick up the new posts right away.

Raped by the police

So, whatever happened to “keep your laws off my body” anyway? And how does the so-called “War on Drugs” permit the police to rape innocent civilians?

1.  David Eckert, regular Joe Shmo, finishes up his shopping at Walmart, and then neglects to come to a complete stop at a stop sign pulling out of the parking lot.  Cop stops him.

2.  Cop observes David Eckert seemingly clenching his butt cheeks.  Decides that’s probable cause to suspect Eckert is hiding drugs in his butt.  He detains Eckert and obtains search warrant to allow for an anal cavity search.

3.  Cop takes Eckert to ER.  Doc there refuses to do cavity search citing it’s “unethical.”

4.  Other medical center is all, “Sure!  We’ll happily anally probe him!”  Eckert is admitted.  And then the real fun begins.

  • Eckert’s abdomen is x-rayed.  No drugs.
  • Eckert’s anus is probed.  No drugs.
  • Eckert’s anus is probed again.  Still no drugs.
  • Eckert is given an enema, and forced to crap in front of docs and police.  His stool is searched.  No drugs.
  • A second enema is given.  Same deal.  No drugs.
  • A third enema is given.  Again, no drugs.
  • Docs perform another x-ray.  No drugs.
  • Eckert is sedated, and a freaking COLONOSCOPY is performed.  NO FREAKING DRUGS.

At no time during any of this did Eckert agree or give consent.  In fact, he protested throughout, as well he should have.

And it turns out he wasn’t the only man raped by the police. “Our investigation reveals another chapter. Another man, another minor
traffic violation, another incident with Leo the K-9 and another
example of the violation of a man’s body.

Police reports state deputies stopped Timothy Young because he turned without putting his blinker on.”

Ladies and gentlemen, the land of the free….

Objective: solidarity

A commenter at Truth Before Dishonor explains what he believes the motivations of the Leftist trolls to be:

There are a couple of substantive things to bear in mind when dealing with the manner in which modern liberals or progressives interact with political opponents.

First of all, as we all realize, their view of “truth” is radically different from the traditional western viewpoint of what constitutes a true statement and what metaphysical meaning the term truth has. This incontestable relativism of theirs has several implications: one of which is that for the progressive, rhetoric becomes the means by which truth is shaped and brought into existence, rather than truth being a propositional description of the world or some portion of it, as it really is, and which is then rhetorically presented.

This relativism then, tends to devalue logical analysis and careful exposition as tools of debate in favor of other kinds of verbal acts intended to influence social relations. Chief among these replacements for truth are the tools of ridicule and disruption. Talk, is conceived of as warfare – not figurative, but literal – by means other than overt physical violence. As such, all of the techniques and deceptions employed in all-out war are considered by leftists and progressives as properly pertaining to political argument.

For the political progressive, silencing you through disruptive or annoying tactics, or discomfiting you emotionally, is just as good if not better than winning an argument on facts: since facts are always conceived as mere data points forensically ready to be deployed in the service of the world as they will dream it.

The goal of the socialist or progressive is after all, not to arrive at the point of truth – which they think is impossible in life and meaningless in an ultimate sense – but, at solidarity, which they think is attainable with the proper methods of social pruning and affect management.

I dropped off of Dana’s site because I was being dragged into interminable squabbles with persons whose hash I had already settled logically or historically time and time again. It was like playing whack-a-mole long after that game has lost its novelty. Their notion of victory, lies in congratulating themselves on summoning the energy to pop up again as a fresh annoyance no matter how humiliating of discrediting their performance would have been for a person of normal sensibilities.

Sound familiar? It should. Because some of the trolls are even the same people. Consider: “New Zealand Socialist book putter backer…. Phoenician in a Time of Romans, banned by multiple Conservative sites
and disdained by multiple other sites, is definitely disdain-worthy….”

That’s from 2011, months before Phony made his first appearance here. And here I thought he was just a particularly freakish PZ/Scalzi fan, but apparently he is something even more political and obsessive. Although wouldn’t it be hilarious if Phony turned out to be Athol exhibiting his dark side?

The new rules of engagement

This is why it is necessary to punch back twice as hard. This is why
you cannot let the poisonous ones into your social circle. This is why
you cannot employ them. This is why you cannot indulge in conspicuous
tolerance. As Athol Kay has learned, those to whom the personal is the
political and the political is the personal have no decency and know no limits:

Back
in May 2011 Jennifer and I were taken to Human Resources and had a
rather odd conversation in the aftermath of being on Inside Edition.
Apparently we’re dangerously monogamous and offensively heterosexual
enough to have resulted in no less than six calls of complaint to our
employer. Like I said, I always figured I’d be taken to HR, but I really
didn’t expect Jennifer to be dragged into it too. Jennifer does have a
minor PR role for her company, so we do see their point, but even then,
it’s no one’s business but ours.

Thus at the time: Yes sir, no sir, three bags full sir.

There’s
really not too much they can do to us directly, it’s not like you can
be fired for kissing your spouse on TV. But after that point, I start
feeling like the cross-hairs are firmly drawn on my back and I start
getting disciplined at work for things that frankly I don’t think I
would have been spanked for before that point. I.e. I see which way the
wind is blowing, work my ass off and in June 2012 I jump to MMSL
full-time.

Which brings us to now, or more correctly a couple months back.

Jennifer
gets a message on a Friday, she’s summoned to HR on Monday. Not told
what about. I’m unsure if the intent was to ruin our weekend, but it
seemed to achieve that goal. Considering Jennifer is the quintessential
good employee, it can only be MMSL related and I feel both shitty and
angry. We’re just on the very fine edge of me being able to carry the
two of us on MMSL income alone, so I Captain up and green light her
quitting her job at any point during that meeting.

It
turns out someone from a state agency funding Jennifer’s employer, has
been printing off a collection of blog posts and anonymously mailing
them to the CEO of her company. So anonymous letter, coming inside a
state agency envelope. HR really has nothing to say to her but, “Ahhh…
this is awkward, but you need to know what’s happening.” It’s also kinda
silly being outed to your employer 2.5 years after you were on national
television. The surprise factor lacks a little.

Anyway…
what it boils down to, is that someone reads this blog, actively
hunting for ways to fuck my wife over… and they are willing to play
dirty.

Notice that this was directed at the wife of a man who is an atheist from New Zealand and is not exactly a paragon of religious conservative middle America.

It is what the activist Left now does and it is one reason why I will not tolerate their trolls any longer. So let this be a
warning to every troll who comments here: do not say
anything
here you do not wish to become public knowledge with your
personal information attached to it here for everyone to see. For the last two years, even the comments that were spammed and deleted have been saved; there are presently 181,807 comments in the database. I’ve tracked down two trolls in the past, and as it happens, both elected to stop
trolling here after discovering that I knew their real identities.

I didn’t publish their personal information here or send the long
compendium of insults, vulgarities, and obscenities they had spewed to
their friends, families, publishers, and employers. But I could have
easily done so. And now that it is clear that this is how the game is being played, well, those of us who are already accustomed to the public view can certainly ensure that everyone else’s actions are too.

Lions Den VI: Tom Kratman

As his fans already know, Tom Kratman has another volume out in his popular the Carerra military science fiction series that started with A Desert Called Peace. One can’t help but like the timely name of Book Five, Come and Take Them, which many readers will recognize as the English translation of the defiant Spartan phrase “Molon Labe”. As usual, if you would like to be one of the three book reviewers, please send me an email and I will send you a PDF for your review.

It is also worth mentioning that two of Tom’s books are free on Kindle Select today, including the first in the Carrera series: A Desert Called Peace and Caliphate

No sense in talking about Vol. V in a series without talking about the series.

Caveat: If you’re a staunch liblepr (liberal-leftist-progressive-red) the odds of you’re getting through the series without suffering a fatal case of exploding brain pan are, at best, fifty-fifty.  This is hilarious, too, because the main character, in the course of creating a one export economy for a small country – the export being highly trained formations of military auxiliaries – finds that he had inadvertently done what most single export economies end up doing, creating a partial “socialist workers paradise.” Nonetheless, every time someone buys one of my books a liberal, somewhere, cries or screams.  And remember: Every time a liberal cries or screams, an angel gets his wings.

I wrote the series to discuss a large number of different things and I wrote it to work at different levels, for different readings, by different people, at different times.  At one level, the first two volumes concerned how the current campaigns should have been fought and why everything has gone to shit.  Note that I predicted that before it happened, well before.  These were also books on revenge and on how one tends to become much like ones enemies.  They also discussed, incidentally, with the Cheng Ho disaster, the failed first attempt at colonization, the likelihood or lack thereof of a colonization attempt that mixed culturally incompatible peoples.

The next volume, The Lotus Eaters, was transitional and political, with a heavy dose of coup d’etat and drug war, the latter of which is a commentary on the silliness and moral cowardice of blaming impoverished Colombians and Mexicans for our societal weakness and idiocy.  The fourth concerned how to turn women into infantry, and get military use out of gays, the old-fashioned way.

Here’s a very brief excerpt:

“Gather ’round, girls,” Franco ordered. The women, all of them still in something like shock, clustered in a circle. “Sit down.”

He began to pass out red felt-tip markers. When everyone had received one, Franco began to speak.

“Okay. I want you to take your markers and I want you to draw a dotted line just like the one I am drawing on my wrist.”

Franco drew a six inch long series of red dots lengthwise down his left wrist. “Everyone done with that? Good. Now draw another one on the other wrist . . . Done? Good. Let me see. Very good. Now there’s no excuse.

“You see, women threaten suicide and even act it out rather frequently, but you fail so often to carry through that I am forced to question your sincerity and competence as a sex. Therefore . . .”

Franco turned toward the door. He tossed a package of razor blades to the floor on his way out.

“Trujillo!” he called over one shoulder. “Collect up the markers in that box and put them by my office door. Anybody who wants a razor blade, just help yourself.  ‘Cut along dotted line.’”

At still another level – and it’s a shame, you’ll agree, that “literary fiction” is invariable concerned with mere style and never with sophisticated thought – we have something very like the world of today – called with deliberate lack of imagination, “Terra Nova” – engaged in war against the world of tomorrow, Old Earth, a hellish nightmare of UN, EU, NGO, and Quango dominated oligarchy, to prevent that kind of oligarchy from arising on the new world.  At yet another level, it’s about demographic change, and what that does to societies, not merely as a result of who comes in, but also about who leaves.

This volume is about that war or, rather, it’s beginnings.  You’ll have to either take my word for it or read the previous four volumes, there’s no Deus ex Machina in there nor in the next one.  Everything – I mean every goddamned thing – was presaged in the previous books. I doubt there has ever been a novel or series about war on the grand scale as thoroughly staffed as these.

There is one jarring – albeit quite deliberate – thing in there, the degree to which the new world resembles the old, physically and politically.  As said, it’s deliberate and by no means thoughtless or lazy; it was harder to do this than to set up a completely new scheme.  Here’s an edited/redacted version of something I wrote to someone on that:

“[The planet is] a game preserve / wildlife refuge… Again, I would have thought that would be obvious but…well…maybe not so much as I’d thought.

Now if a group has the power to link galaxies (as far as we know), and intends to (as far as we can tell), and intends to set up a wildlife preserve, going so far as to genengineer plant life to poison intelligent life (as far as we know), one would expect them to want the wildlife to prosper, no? That requires similar weather, yes? And so what is surprising about people who can link galaxies also lifting up land masses to get the right kind of weather?

That actually wasn’t going to be the case, but someone pointed me to an article – the title was something to the effect of “We’re all Panamanians” – that made the case that it was changes in weather patterns arising from the rise of the Isthmus of Panama that led to the evolution of, among other life forms, us. Once I started thinking about that, I realized that, yes, if you’ve got godlike power and you intend to set up a wildlife preserve on another planet, you’re going to have to do something about the weather, which will require changing the terrain.

As far as similar names, do you really think that’s unrealistic? I mean, I thought I was born in Boston, named for Boston, England, in New England, named for England, next to New York, named for York, which had once had a city named New Amsterdam, named for….oh, well, maybe I was born and raised somewhere else and it’s all an illusion and people never, never – what never? No, never! – never name a new settlement for home… 😉

The nations didn’t just happen to be settled. If you read with some care, you can see that there was a deliberate movement to get all the old fashioned nationalist types off of Earth. What’s hard about that? They did, of course, try to set up a monocultural planet, but that failed with the Cheng Ho disaster. (Funny how people miss that no one ever answered Rodney King’s question.) Why? Because I would (and did) expect it to fail.

Let me turn that around; given the Cheng Ho disaster, why would they group themselves differently than on old Earth? Why would anyone risk their lives by mixing? Given the desire of sundry transnationalists to get the old fashioned types off of Earth, why wouldn’t they learn from the Cheng Ho disaster and accommodate emigrants’ desire to be with others like themselves? I think the burden’s on you, or anyone, who objects to the scheme to answer those questions.

Besides, the easy sci fi assumption of monocultural planets may come to pass when there are enough planets discovered to give one to everybody. But when it’s only one? No, it’s going to be partitioned, sort of like the Pope partitioned what we call Latin America.

What point to doing it the way I did? Because I wanted the reader to be able to read the book / series at several different levels, one of which was commentary on the here and now.
