“Arkhaven is the BEST”

This is an intriguing video from a comics book reviewer and illustrator who has not only been reading Arktoons, but is apparently going to be putting some of his original work up there in the near future. Full disclosure: There is nothing to disclose, as I know nothing about the reviewer or his forthcoming comic. The latter is news to me since I leave all that sort of thing up to the Production Editor and I usually learn about a new independent series the day before it first appears on the site.

Today’s topic is Arkhaven Comics. Arkhaven Comics is kind of like a Webtoons-inspired comics website primarily helmed by Chuck Dixon, although there are a number of other talented writers and artists across the board on the website. And this place, this website has been a haven and a godsend for me in many ways…

That’s arkhaven.com probably one of the best resources for independent and professional grade comics out there at the moment. 100 percent free, so if you want to get into comics and you’re looking for new things to read or you want to check out the indie comic space and support some independent creators, check out arkhaven.com.

Arkhaven is the BEST place for FREE COMICS!

What pleases me so much about this video is that a) it represents a viewpoint from entirely outside the greater community, and b) it demonstrates how some of the less-viewed comics have their own loyal followings and are able to hold their own. While the site traffic has seen slow, but steady growth since Asteroid Day in April, we’ve begun to see some increased growth over the last month, and as Chuck Dixon observed last week, each million views is coming faster as we begin to approach the four-million mark.

The interesting thing is that while we don’t have anywhere nearly as many comics series as Tapas or Webtoons, we probably have more strong series than Tapas already and our best series are now capable of going head-to-head with the very best that Webtoons has to offer. And while we still have a very long ways to go in terms of the number of independent creators, views, and subscribers, it’s becoming clear to neutral observers that Arktoons is not only a competitive toons site, but is already, as the reviewer asserts, “the best place”.

And it’s going to continue improving. We’re already making plans for much higher resolutions and are beginning to lay the groundwork for that with some of our leading comics such as Hypergamouse, How To Succeed Like a Darklord, and Midnight’s War, while we’ll be introducing great new comics such as Witchstalker and Red Hornet in 2022. So, if you want to help us continue to advance on this front, don’t hesitate to become an Arkhaven subscriber subscriber in the new year.

Conversating About Conversations

This may be the one and only time I have ever felt any actual pity for Ben Shapiro. These two somehow manage to make the mutual navel-gazing of the New Atheists look less hideously embarrassing in retrospect. And what sort of twisted, self-abusive masochist hears about a conversation between these two posturing charlatans and decides, “hey, now THAT is something I don’t want to miss!”

And yes, this is what Hell looks like. For both of them.

Off Limits

In which a former fan discovers that a comedian is actually a comedian.

During one of Owen’s livestreams, he delved into the JFK assassination and how the video that everyone sees was created by a Jew after the fact and that no raw footage of the incident exists for public consumption to this day. In the comments of said video, I mentioned that my mother remembered seeing it herself. Now, I was mistaken and I probably just remember it that way when my mother was just saying that she remembers the news report of what happened that day. She lived on a pig farm and was probably either at school or doing chores when it happened for all I know.

Owen replied to my false comment by calling my mother a liar.

But it’s SusanTube comments. And nobody cares about those. The only thing lower than SusanTube comments is Reddit comments.

The next day, however, Mr. Smith took a screenshot of that comment, posted it on his stream, and said that while he didn’t know who I was, he was certain that my mother was a “fucking liar”.

It’s one thing if he attacked me. That would be legit, especially if half of your streams just involve you yelling at your fans for being stupid morons and that the world is flat, there is no space, and there would be Utopia if everyone was like you.

(That last part may be unfair. Whatever, it stays.)

So I did the only sane thing I could think, traveled to Washington state, set his ducks on fire, and pissed in his goat milk. And then I sent 1 million emails to Vox Day about how he’s partnered with a violent pony snatcher.

No, that’s not right. I did no such thing. I did, however, write him a letter explaining that my mother was not a liar and that I was probably just misremembering what she told me.

I even told him that I wasn’t interested in an apology. I just wanted him to understand that my mother was off-limits.

First, Owen is a comedian. That’s literally what he does. He’s an entertainer. As an economist, he’s a very good comedian. As a nuclear physicist, he’s a good comedian. As a game designer, he’s a good comedian. Are you starting to recognize a pattern there? Stop a) expecting him to be anything else or b) projecting your own ideas about what you’d like him to be on him. You be you. Let Owen be Owen. And for the love of all that is good and beautiful and true, stop expecting any of the rest of us to be anything beyond what we happen to be.

To paraphrase the immortal Douglas Adams, we’re just, like, zese guys, you know? We’re not prophets, we’re not seers, we’re not the hidden masters of the secret gnosis, and with the exception of Jordan Peterson and Scott Adams, we’re not pretending to be.

DILBERT, CORRECTED

Second, WTF? How is Owen, or anyone else, to understand that this guy’s mother is off-limits when the guy brought her into the situation in the first place? Either Owen is wrong, or this guy is wrong, or this guy’s mother is a liar. And until Owen is presented with evidence that the guy’s claim about the mother is correct, Owen is perfectly justified in continuing to state that the woman is, as he apparently believes, “a fucking liar”. If you bring X into the conversation, you have absolutely no right to protest when the other parties respond to your claims about X. That one’s on you, sport.

Third, even if the guy’s mother is a liar, so what? My mother lied with craftsmanship and an effortless fluidity that can only be described as artistic. She had me convinced until I was nearly 30 years old that the crust was, in fact, the healthiest part of the bread. She clearly got the talent from my grandfather, who had one of my brothers believing for decades that his black hair, bronze skin, and high cheekbones were the result of a Black Irish ancestry. I admire and aspire to their level of parental duplicity, which is why meerkats are increasingly known around the world as “the piranha of the Serengeti”.

And, of course, meerkats are the reason they can’t have desert penguins at the zoo.

No Racism in RPGs

All races and alignments are now equally good and capable. After all, we wouldn’t want anyone playing an orc to think that he is any less beautiful or intelligent or magical than an elf.

A plethora of descriptions regarding various races in the Dungeons & Dragons universe have been scrapped from the guidebooks in an effort to make the tabletop RPG more “welcoming and inclusive.” The push for representation and inclusivity in Western culture has not ignored the tabletop gaming scene, where publishers of some of the most-played games have been updating their releases to appeal to progressive social justice activists.

In a recent blog post, Jeremy Crawford, the principal rule designer for the legendary RPG Dungeons & Dragons, revealed that there had been a mass removal of “problematic lore” from several D&D books throughout the year, and these changes will be reflected in both the newly printed editions and the online PDF versions.

This is what has been removed from the D&D orc lore. It appears I’m going to need to completely rewrite the Lugbol chapters in A Sea of Skulls.

With their culturally ingrained tendency to bow before superior strength, orcs can be subjugated by a powerful and charismatic individual. Evil human spellcasters and rulers in particular have a penchant for enslaving or deceiving orcs into service. A leader backed by a great military force could swoop down upon a tribe, kill its leaders, and cow the rest of the orcs into submission. A spellcaster typically takes a more devious approach, using magic to conjure up false omens that strike fear into the tribe and make it obedient. A wizard might manipulate a few of the orcs that rank just below the war chief, using them as pawns to help overthrow the leader. The wizard validates the change in command with signs supposedly delivered by the gods (which are in truth nothing but a few well-cast illusions), and turns the tribe into a strike force eager to do the bidding of its new chief. The survivors of a tribe scattered by defeat sometimes fall back on their fighting skills to find employment, individually or in small groups, with whoever is willing to hire them. These mercenaries, while they might pride themselves on their seeming independence, nevertheless strive to follow through on their end of a bargain, because being paid by one’s employer is better than being hunted down for breaking a deal.

Most orcs have been indoctrinated into a life of destruction and slaughter. But unlike creatures who by their very nature are evil, such as gnolls, it’s possible that an orc, if raised outside its culture, could develop a limited capacity for empathy, love, and compassion. No matter how domesticated an orc might seem, its blood lust flows just beneath the surface. With its instinctive love of battle and its desire to prove its strength, an orc trying to live within the confines of civilization is faced with a difficult task.

The lore of humans depicts orcs as rapacious fiends, intent on coupling with other humanoids to spread their seed far and wide. In truth, orcs mate with non-orcs only when they think such a match will strengthen the tribe. When orcs encounter human who match them in prowess and ferocity, they sometimes strike an alliance that is sealed by mingling the bloodlines of the two groups. A half-orc in an orc tribe is often just as strong as a full-blooded orc and also displays superior cunning. Thus, half-orcs are capable of gaining status in the tribe more quickly than their fellows, and it isn’t unusual for a half-orc to rise to leadership of a tribe.

Sadly, all this inclusivity and equality isn’t going to make high school girls any more interested in tubby RPG nerds than they were before. But hey, the mere possibility makes it worth destroying 40 years of gaming lore, right?
