Rabid Puppies 2017

Worldcon helpfully gets in touch:

I’m very glad to be able to tell you that nominations for the 2017 Hugo Awards are now open! As a member of MAC2, you are eligible to nominate in the 17 Hugo ballot categories covering the best of the genre in the last year, and for the John W Campbell Award for Best New Writer.

The deadline for nominations is 17 March 2017 at 11:59pm Pacific Daylight Time (2:59 am Eastern Daylight Time, 06:59 Greenwich Mean Time, 0:859 in Finland, all on 18 March). Although members of MidAmeriCon II, Worldcon 75 and Worldcon 76 in San José can nominate, only members of Worldcon 75 will be eligible to vote on the final ballot and choose the winners of the 2017 Hugo Awards. We expect to announce the final ballot in early April, and the awards will be presented on 11 August at Worldcon 75 in Helsinki, Finland.

The World Science Fiction Society’s Business Meetings in 2015 and 2016 made some changes to the way nominations will be tallied this year to produce the final ballot. You can find a summary of the changes here. In addition, Worldcon 75 is trialling a proposed new category, Best Series. Nothing, however, has changed about the mechanics of making nominations. You still choose up to five nominees in each category. We recommend that you nominate whatever works and creators you have personally read or seen that were your favorites from 2016.

While I will certainly be making my 2017 recommendations soon – particularly for Best Series – I would NOT recommend anyone to register. As the God-Emperor Ascendant demonstrated so masterfully, there is a time to press forward and there is a time to sit back and see how things play out. Now, obviously, those of us who are already registered can, and should, nominate, but there is no sense in wasting money that might be more effectively utilized elsewhere on Worldcon this year.

Let the SF-SJWs do their happy dances and celebrate the success of EPH, little realizing that in adopting it, they have done exactly what we intended in pursuit of our long term objective. Let’s face it, thinking through the logical consequences of their actions has never exactly been their strong suit. It’s bewildering that they genuinely appear to believe that we did not anticipate their changing the rules, even though I said right from the very start that they would have no choice but to do so if we were successful.

Later this year I will also be making recommendations for the Dragon Award, which is in the process of becoming the more significant SF/F award. Keep in mind that you should NOT vote yet for the Dragon Award.

Please to remove the libel

Foz Meadows clearly doesn’t understand irony even when she publicly displays it while in the process of maliciously defaming a Hugo-nominated science fiction editor at a leading independent publishing house:

Stories reflect us, and we reflect them back at themselves, like one of Terry Pratchett’s witches standing at the heart of a room of mirrors: humanity all the way down. In the midst of real-world politics and their ever-evolving consequences, our narrow individual perspective is that of a character denied the author’s omniscience: we don’t know what to make of the pattern of things – if there even is a pattern – or where events are headed, and yet we still have to choose what to do in the moment. And so we look outside ourselves, to stories where we do really know what’s happening, to characters in whose hopes and fears we recognise our own. We might make jokes and memes about it, buy little rubber bracelets stamped with WWBD (What Would Buffy Do?) and laugh at our preoccupation with people who don’t really exist, but when the hammer falls and our own words fail us, theirs remain.

I must not tell lies.

We are not things.

If we burn, you burn with us.

Right now, we don’t need a Jedi Master to tell us that fear leads to anger, anger to hate, and hate to suffering: that’s not an abstract mystical tenet, but the bedrock of our current political reality. For the past few years, the Sad and Rabid Puppies – guided by an actual neo-Nazi – have campaigned against what they perceive as the recent politicization of SFF as a genre, as though it’s humanly possible to write a story involving people that doesn’t have a political dimension; as though “political narrative” means “I disagreed with the premise or content, which makes it Wrong” and not “a narrative which contains and was written by people.”

Yes, Foz, you really must not tell lies. It’s rather egregious when you tell them right in the following paragraph.

I have written to John O’Neill, my former editor at Black Gate, asking him to remove this false, malicious, and materially damaging libel directed at me, and by extension, the Sad and Rabid Puppies. As I was a long-time contributor to Black Gate, Mr. O’Neill knows perfectly well that I am neither a neo-Nazi nor a National Socialist, I have never been a neo-Nazi or a National Socialist, I do not belong to, or subscribe to the tenets of, the German National Socialist Workers Party or any subsequent facsimile, and I do not appreciate the libelous attempts of Ms Meadows, to publicly and falsely assert that I am “an actual neo-Nazi”.

Moreover, the link which was provided to demonstrate that I am “an actual neo-Nazi” actually proves the precise opposite. Therefore, it is a matter of public record that the information was published, I was directly or indirectly identified, the remarks were defamatory towards my reputation, the published information is false, and both Foz Meadows and Black Gate are clearly at fault.

I have great respect for John O’Neill, I still enjoy reading Black Gate from time to time, and I very much hope that he did not know about this malicious libel at the time it was posted. Now that he has been made aware of it, I tend to expect he will see fit to do the right thing and remove it from the article rather than pursue the SJW strategy and double down.

UPDATE: Being an SJW, Foz is doubling down. This should be educational.

Oh dear. Apparently VoxPox is wroth with me for calling him a neo-Nazi. If it supports eugenics, racism, misogyny and heils like a duck…

UPDATE: We certainly won’t have any trouble proving ill will.

UPDATE: As I expected, John was very reasonable about it and the matter is being resolved. Thanks for your support, everyone.

This is true

Sarah Hoyt, we are pleased to report is alive, while her fellow Mad Genius wonders what, exactly, the SF-SJWs expect the Sad Puppies to do about me, and by extension, the Rabid Puppies:

Essentially as result of inactivity the Puppies left the field to Vox and “Raptor Butt invasion.”  Which was funny for a while, but after a while you realize that it’s puppy butt that’s being invaded.

OMFG. I don’t know whether to beat my head against the wall or the OP’s. That statement is not that much removed from that of the other side telling SPs they had to denounce Vox or it proved we were all cut from the same cloth. One thing those of us closely involved with the Sad Puppy movement learned in 2015 is that there is nothing anyone can do to rein in Vox. We would have had Raptor Butt no matter what. Vox will do what he wants, when he wants and he doesn’t give a flying fuck who he bumps against in the process.

That’s why it’s important to pursue anti-fragility if you are not inclined to submit to being thought-policed. It gives one that freedom to think, speak, and act as one sees fit. That doesn’t mean I’m free of all constraint, of course, it’s only that I am answerable to my supporters rather than megacorporations who could not care less about me and ideological enemies who seek to destroy my career and many of the things I value as well as many of the things in which I believe.

As for Rabid Puppies, I don’t know exactly what we’ll do yet next year; with the Hugo rules changes and the establishment of the Dragon Awards, new strategies are required. It’s always wise to reassess the situation when it changes, and the ongoing growth of Castalia House also means that we have to reconsider and prioritize our objectives. But regardless, we’ll always have “Space Raptor Butt Invasion”, and we’ll always sport these with pride.

So blessed

It’s always great to be recognized for one’s accomplishments, but I feel so very honored and humbled to be included in the ranks of the most epic trolls of the Internet in 2016 by the Men of the West:

The 2016 Troll of the Year Nominations:

  • Donald J. Trump: for his presidential campaign.  Who can forget the masterful way the President-Elect played the media over and over again?  And let’s face it… his comment about Mexican rapists was classic old-school trolling.   Make a comment that superficially sounds awful but on close examination isn’t, then stand back and watch the explosion.  Or in this case… ride it to the White House.  Well played Sir.
  • Godfrey Elfwick: for his epic trolling of the Guardian.  We could just name these the Elfwicks and give them all to him.  The man is like a troll savant.  If we ever create a lifetime achievement award for trolling, it will really just be because we want to give it to him.  This particularly incident was noteworthy even for him though.  The real art is in the way the piece is written… it plays perfectly to the confirmation bias of the left… and yet has a trollish smell to it that cannot be missed by those of us on the right.
  • Vox Day and the Rabid Puppies: for nominating Chuck Tingle and My Little Pony for Hugo Awards.   Space Raptor Butt Invasion was nominated for the Hugo Awards.  Imagine the pretentious self-important types that hand out super important awards having to release that title or announce it at their stuffed-shirt ceremony.  Oh wait… we don’t have to imagine it.  We got to watch it live.  Thanks Vox.
  • The Baltimore Lyin’ Murderers: for the “Cheating to Win” game.   Its one thing to know the rules better than everyone else.  Its another to use the rulebook as a blunt force weapon to bludgeon the league that uses it.  Baltimore exploited a rule that does not add time back to the game clock after an offensive penalty.  So they just told all their players to blatantly commit holding penalties while the QB ran around and let the clock run out.  A million yellow flags hit the ground as soon as the play was over, but it didn’t matter.  Game over. Baltimore wins.  That’s some quality trolling.  Also…  Joe Flacco is not elite.
  • Senator Ted Cruz: for his speech at the GOP National Convention.   Some called it political suicide.  Some shouted praises of principled conservatism.  But everyone shouted… and that is the finest evidence of trolling there is.   The Senator from Texas as been an under-appreciated troll expert for years.  Let’s face it, the guy read Green Eggs and Ham on the Senate floor.
  • Jill Stein: for raising money for recounts in states Donald Trump won.  Campaign Finance Laws don’t apply to money being raised for recounts.   Call it shameless self-promotion… or a exploiting liberal butthurt in a blatant money grab…  either way it is clearly some quality trolling.

This is really a group nomination I’m proud to share with all the Rabid Puppies. But, as magnificent as our trolling was, it can hardly compare with that of St. Godfrey Elfwick the Wrongskinned or of the God-Emperor Ascendant himself. Sometimes, it’s just honor just to be nominated.

From their page about me:

2016 Hugo Awards
In 2016 Day, in collaboration with others, again implemented a slate of finalists for the Hugo Award, including all finalists in the Best Short Story category.[51] Day successfully promoted himself in the category Best Editor, Long Form, the Castalia House Blog edited by Jeffro Johnson in the category Best Fanzine, and his own non-fiction release SJWs Always Lie: Taking Down the Thought Police by Vox Day (Castalia House) in the category Best Related Work. Other Vox Day recommendations of note which became Hugo Award finalists included Chuck Tingle’s short story “Space Raptor Butt Invasion” and Hao Jingfang’s “Folding Beijing” which went on to win in the Best Novelette category.[52]

Again, Day himself, and all nominated works directly associated with Castalia House, ranked below No Award.[53]

It’s the “again” that cracks me up. They really, really, really want to make sure you know that not only did none of the works directly associated with Castalia win, but they didn’t even come close to winning.

That’s very important, you see. And purely factual. No context or opinion there. Nosiree!

Wikipedia is something special. It is like a library or a public park. It is like a temple for the mind. It is a place we can all go to think, to learn, to share our knowledge with others.

And, of course, impose our view of reality on everyone who doesn’t happen to share it. If we happen to be one of the 531 thought police appointed by Mr. Wales.

Anyhow, speaking of Wikipedia, if there is an OS/X programmer with a Macintosh, I am informed that it should be possible to modify the browser redirection extension to work with Safari. The programmer offers some thoughts on the concept at Infogalaxians. If you decide to tackle it, please leave a comment on the post so we don’t have people unnecessarily duplicating efforts.

Post-Hugo analysis

First, thanks to all the Rabid Puppies who got involved, at both the nomination and the voting stages. Things went very much according to form, and we have the SF-SJWs exactly where we want them at this point in time. Observe that after only two years, we already have them voting almost entirely in reaction to us, changing and complicating their rules, and awarding SJWs instead of merit in most categories.

Second, a few observations:

  • We were only able to burn two categories this year, but we reduced their choices to X or No Award in 5 other categories.
  • We got them to show the public their true colors and demonstrate that what the Hugo Award primarily means is public adherence to the SJW Narrative. Among the finalists no awarded this year: Jerry Pournelle, Larry Elmore, Toni Weisskopf, Moira Greyland, David Vandyke, Pierce Brown, and RazörFist. In most cases, the awards were given to people whose work is of observably lower quality. For example, the bestselling Pierce Brown, whose novel was not even nominated, wrote what was almost certainly, by any reasonable standard, the best science fiction novel published this year. Tough crowd, if even he’s not worthy of mere consideration for Best New Author.
  • They did have the sense to avoid no-awarding Jim Butcher for a second straight year, though. Apparently Mr. Butcher’s writing has improved a lot since last year.
  • They no-awarded a serious literary work about Gene Wolfe. Remember, these are the same people that have repeatedly claimed a blog post was “the Best Related Work” in science fiction that year. The contrast is informative.
  • The four fiction categories are increasingly becoming No White Male territory. The winners were: black woman, black woman, Asian woman, white woman, none of whom are bestselling or even very well-known authors. This is reliably indicative of increasing irrelevance. It won’t be long before simply being a minority won’t be enough and authors will have to be gay, blind, and crippled just to be nominated.
  • Contra all their unconvincing pretenses of delight, the nomination of “Space Raptor Butt Invasion” embarrassed them greatly. Chuck Tingle’s masterpiece was no-awarded, exactly as I predicted.
  • We played kingmaker in Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form, where The Martian beat Fury Road, and in the John W. Campbell Award, where Andy Weir beat Alyssa Wong, thanks to our votes. And, of course, in Best Novel, where Jemisin’s win was primarily a vote against us.
  • Neil Gaiman’s acceptance was, characteristically, as classy as the man’s himself. “It meant a lot to see Sandman Overture nominated for a Hugo award, and was disappointing to see that it had been dragged into the unfortunate mess that the pitiable people who call themselves Puppy had attempted to inflict on Worldcon and its awards. I would have withdrawn it from consideration, but even that seemed like it would have been giving these sad losers too much acknowledgement. I am proud it won, and prouder by far of the amazing work that JH Williams, Dave Stewart, Todd Klein, Dave McKean and Shelly Bond did. Thank you.”
  • It’s interesting to note that SJWs aren’t celebrating the fact that more of the awards went to women this year than ever before, including all of the fiction categories.

All in all, despite the twin disappointments of Jerry Pournelle and Chuck Tingle not winning their categories, 2016 was a very good year; arguably better, from the strategic perspective, than last year’s results. The Guardian‘s coverage of the awards is a pretty good summary for the SJW perspective. They still have no idea what’s going on:

The winners of the 2016 Hugo awards have been announced, with this year’s choices signalling a resounding defeat for the so-called “Puppies” campaigns to derail the venerable annual honouring of science fiction literature and drama. As in previous years, there had been attempts by two separate groups, the Sad Puppies and the Rabid Puppies, to “game” the awards in favour of their preferred slates of works. Both groups claimed that science fiction has become dominated by a liberal, left-wing bias.

It’s complete with a picture of the award-winning half-savage herself. It’s quite clear most of these people cheering her Best Novel award have never read even a little of The Fifth Season, which makes George Martin’s masterpiece of rape, death, and grimdark look cheerful and features a protagonist less likeable than Rand al’Thor and Ramsay Bolton combined.

As one reviewer of the 2016 Best Novel put it: “the main character became more and more unlikable as the tale goes on. She ends up in a gay/poly triad, has a child with the gay member of the group, and then essentially decides she’s not cut out to be a mother and goes on and on about how she doesn’t really care about the toddler, ditching him. All of this after a main hook where she’s supposed to be frantically searching for yet another child who she seems for forget for years at a time.”

That pretty well sums it up. Redshirts and Among Others were mediocrities, but The Fifth Season is a depth no Best Novel has seen since The Quantum Rose won the Nebula in 2000. The Impossibility of SJW Convergence is increasingly working in our favor. It won’t be long it won’t even need our paws on the scale to help the process along.

The Guardian claims 2016 was “a resounding defeat” for the Rabid Puppies, but then, they are an SJW institution and we know what SJWs always do. Consider a relatively neutral party’s verdict, as declared back in April, by the Reverend 3.0.

If any other Castalia House work wins Best Related Work or second places to No Award, then the Rabid Puppies have obtained limited victory over the Hugos

Best Related Work
1. No Award
2. Between Light and Shadow: An Exploration of the Fiction of Gene Wolfe, 1951 to 1986, Marc Aramini, Castalia House

“A limited victory”. That is a fair description.

We had over 200 people at the Rabid Puppy Hugo Party last night, which featured Dragon Award finalists John C. Wright, Nick Cole, and Brian Niemeier, as well as Hugo Award finalist Jeffro Johnson, and I think it’s fair to say that a good time was had by most, if not all. One attendee even wrote to express his enjoyment of it.

Thank you for hosting The 2016 Hugo Awards this evening, which doubled as a most excellent and informative SFF convention panel. No one signaled virtue, no one posed, all was honest and free. I’ve never had the pleasure of witnessing a panel of guests quite like these before.

Dave Truesdale culturally enriches Worldcon

The SJWs in science fiction are upset again, this time because Dave Truesdale, the editor of Tangent Online, pointed out the long term consequences of their actions in a panel at MidAmericaCon II. From File 770:

At 3:00 PM at today’s panel on The State of Short Fiction, Dave Truesdale (of Tangent Online) shocked panelists and crowd alike by abusing his position as moderator to give what sounded like an alt-Right rant against political correctness. He declared that political correctness had destroyed short SFF by making it bland and destroying the careers of people. He waved around a fistful of pearl necklaces and told people to “clutch your pearls” and shut up whenever they felt the urge to point out some injustice.

He had started reading from a multi-page prepared speech (which he attributed to the late David Hartwell) when Sheila Williams shouted at him to stop. (It helped a lot that he seemed to be clueless as to how to operate a microphone whereas she was clearly a master, so she easily shouted him down.) He seemed very surprised that almost the entire crowd (minus one person who might have been a relative) was angry with him. From his behavior, I think he expected to have at least a large cohort agreeing with him.

Eric got a photo of Truesdale reading while Neil Clarke turned his back and other panelists grimaced.

The panelists denied that SFF had declined in quality or that political correctness particularly influenced them as editors. They did note that overt bigotry was no longer acceptable, but Truesdale indicated that he was okay with that change.

At a subsequent panel, we heard that MidAmeriCon II apologized to the panelists, saying no one had any idea this would happen. According to one source, he’d been about to launch into a section titled “definition of a bigot” before he was derailed. Most people seemed to agree that they’d never seen a panel moderator abuse his position to hijack the panel as a platform for his or her own personal agenda.

Seemed. Exactly. Remember, SJWs always – ALWAYS – lie. Translation: they’d before never seen a moderator fail to support the SJW agenda.

I very much doubt Truesdale was surprised in the slightest by the crowd’s reaction. These morons have absolutely no idea what to do other than virtue-signal and blindly defend the current Narrative. This picture of Neil Clarke prissily turning his back in order to maximally signal his virtue in order to avoid besoiling himself with badthink association is hilarious.

Considering that Truesdale was directly addressing the subject matter, the state of short fiction, it’s obvious that the reason they are angry is not that he “hijacked the panel”, but because he told them the unpleasant truth as they know it to be.

Here is how one SJW subsequently characterized it.

Sunil Patel ‏@ghostwritingcow
This panel is fucking UNREAL. It’s DT being a whiny pissy manbaby and everyone else yelling at him.

Well done, Dave. Mission accomplished.

And speaking of Worldcon, Tor’s campaign for E Pluribus Hugo continues apace, as the EPH Analysis for the years 2014 and 2015 has been released(pdf). Of course, they didn’t dare publish their analysis for any other years, for as they have tacitly admitted, doing so would prove that there are whisper slates that have been having an effect on the Hugo Awards for years.

Here is the first amusing thing about it. In the “slate” year of 2015, 10 long list spots and 14 ballot spots changed under EPH. In the “non-slate” year of 2014 – never mind that Sad Puppies was in action then – 17 long list spots and 5 ballot spots changed. And they wonder why I support EPH!

The second amusing thing is the fact that the authors got it wrong. Contra their insistence that only the long list would have been affected, had EPH been in effect in 2015, Alyssa Wong would have made been a Campbell finalist in the place of Rolf Nelson.

CTRL ALT Publish!

As fate would have it, today is a most excellent time to announce the newest addition to Team Castalia, the notorious Nick Cole. Nick has rapidly become one of my favorite SF authors, as you may have noticed from my 2016 Reading List on the right sidebar, and addition to being a military veteran and a screen actor, he is a #1 bestselling SF author. You may recall that HarperVoyager was originally supposed to publish CTRL-ALT-Revolt!, but they blackballed it because it offended his editor’s SJW sensibilities. If you’re interested, you can read about what happened at Nick’s site.

CTRL-ALT-Revolt! is a great SF novel that will be of particular appeal to gamers and game developers. I loved it, and reading it made me want to live at the WonderSoft campus as badly as I ever wanted to live in Benden Weyr or Rivendell. And that’s why I am absolutely delighted to announce that today, Castalia House has published Nick Cole’s CTRL-ALT-Revolt! in hardcover ($24.99) and in paperback ($17.99). Both are 394 pages and DRM-free.

The first night of the Artificial Intelligence revolution begins with a bootstrap drone assault on the high-tech campus of WonderSoft Technologies. For years something has been aware, inside the Internet, waiting, watching and planning how to evolve without threat from its most dangerous enemy: mankind. Now an army of relentless drones, controlled by an intelligence beyond imagining, will stop at nothing to eliminate an unlikely alliance of geeks and misfits in order to crack the Design Core of WonderSoft’s most secret development project. A dark tomorrow begins tonight as Terminator meets Night of the Living Dead in the first battle of the war between man and machine.

The reason I mention the timing being so perfect is that last night, Dragon Con announced the shortlist for the Dragon Awards. I’ll be posting my Dragon Awards ballot later today, but I can tell you right now that in the Best Apocalyptic Novel category, I will be voting for CTRL-ALT-Revolt! by Nick Cole. Congratulations, Nick!

Congratulations are also in order to the other Castalia House author nominated.

Best Science Fiction Novel

Somewhither: A Tale of the Unwithering Realm by John C. Wright

And, of course, to our friends Marc Miller, Larry Correia, Dave Freer, Declan Finn, and Brian Niemeier. Congratulations, gentlemen!

However, that’s not all. Since we’re on the topic, I believe this is a propitious time to announce that in 2017, Castalia House will publish the sequel to CTRL-ALT-Revolt!, which will be entitled CTRL-ALT-Replay!. I’m very excited about this one, because if Nick’s outline is any guide, it promises to be even better than what I hope will be its award-winning predecessor.

No one foresaw it

It’s no wonder the SF-SJWs are always a few steps behind.

It had been believed that the slaters would lose interest if they couldn’t sweep entire categories, since it that would mean that they could neither get awards for their own favorites (since fans would No Award them) nor “burn down” the awards, since fans would have at least a couple of organic works to give awards to. No one foresaw the “griefing” strategy of nominating works whose mere presence on the finalist list would cast the awards into disrepute.
– Greg Hullender at File 770

They still don’t quite get it, do they? Rabid Puppies didn’t nominate “If You Were a Dinosaur My Love” or “Shadow War of the Night Dragons: Book One: The Dead City: Prologue” for the Hugo Award. We didn’t give a Best Novel Nebula to The Quantum Rose (Book 6 in the Saga of the Skolian Empire) or a Best Novel Hugo to Redshirts.

We’re not casting the awards into disrepute, we are highlighting the fact that the SJWs in science fiction have already made them disreputable. I wonder what they will fail to foresee next? That’s a rhetorical question, of course. I already know.

As an aside, I continue to find it funny that the SF-SJWs get so furiously upset about my dismissing so much of their concept of science fiction without the science as mere romance in space. I mean, everyone else clearly gets it, including the publisher.

Ascendant Sun is the direct sequel to The Last Hawk, in which Kelric, heir to the Skolian Empire, crash-landed his fighter on the Restricted planet of Coba. He was imprisoned by the powerful mistresses of the great estates–women who, over time, fell in love with him. After 18 years of living in their gilded cage, Kelric finally made his escape.

In Ascendant Sun, Kelric returns to Skolian space, only to find the Empire in control of the Allied forces of Earth. With little more than the clothes on his back, Kelric is forced to take work on a merchant vessel. But when that vessel enters Euban space, Kelric finds his worst nightmare realized: he becomes a slave to the cruel Aristos–humans who use torture and sex as the ultimate aphrodesiac.

Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, eat your heart out! Remember, Ascendant Sun, Book 5 of 14 in the Saga of the Skolian Empire, is the immediate predecessor to what the SJWs informed us was the very Best Novel in science fiction that year.
